Looks like the clock is wrong on the PC!

With utmost respect - uh...Duh!

Just read that screen again and do it slowly.

You may then notice that the date and time on the PC is somewhere in 2005 and Firefox is quite correctly complaining that the certificate for Google is not yet in date.

Set the date and time correctly, plus set the clock to use a network time server, and all might be well.

Although Windows XP can be a bit dodgy in the hands of a novice when connecting to the Internet.

Windows XP is out of support and shouldn't be trusted to connect to the internet (not that it was particularly trustworthy when it was still supported). It would IMO be most unwise to use such an obsolete bit of kit online for anything business-related.

And probably a breach of GDPR to have any personal data stored on it when it's connected.

The guy I gave it to has just started his business and the PC is (apparently) going to be used to run a few business spreadsheets. I did make him aware of xp risks and that he should back up the spreadsheets on a memory stick at least. The PC was going to the tip but I put it on facebook in case anyone could use it.

I'd have thought that once he has the machine set up there should be little need to ever connect to the internet, except occasionally to update AV software etc. If he is on facebook, presumably he has some other device for casual surfing, and could keep the business machine pretty secure.

It is still used by some hospitals in things like radiotherapy machines CT scanners and MRI scanners.

why would he need to update AV software if he isn't connecting to the internet

he isn't likely to get a virus inserting an empty USB stick for backup purposes

Frankly if spomeone has no clue about a computer anyway, and simply wants to run a spreadsheet, install Linux mint on the thing. It will run better than XP ever did.

And is totally uspported and up to date.

Only if the requirement is windows specfic should anyone still be using windows at all, let alone XP.

you seem to be missing the link that "if someone has no clue about a computer anyway", they wont have a flipping clue how to install Linux

I have a bit of a clue about computes and I still can't figure out how to get Linux to run on it

Many machines are too old to run current Mint. There are lightweight distros for old machines eg puppy etc. You can test-run most linuxes by booting direct from cd, it's slow that way but you get to see if the distro suits you.

Check the date is correctly set in the bios.
