No you do not have to *make* the medium 'bootable' You simply copy the ISO IMAGE onto the DVD. That makes it bootable.

Or onto the USB drive of course.

If your PC can boot from a USB stick

I mean what could be easier than

'download the ISO file' 'Insert Blank DVD in DVD drive' 'Right-click the ISO file and select Burn disk image.'

I mean if you can't manage that you are too stupid to even use Windows.

How many times have you encountered someone who when told to do that, ended up with a CD/DVD with the single file "mint.iso" on it, rather than the image burnt to the CD/DVD?

But in the hands of a novice it will then never actually do anything, apart from causing rapid hair-loss.

You need to write it as an image, not as a file; simples.

Many flavours of Linux are easy to use, even for novices. And Windows can cause rapid hair-loss too.

That's probably because the hardware vendors only support XP. It's fairly safe as a stand-alone installation that only talks to a well protected file/database server and never reads USB or optical media. Start letting people connect to it from their Windows desktops, or stick USB drives in it, and you're asking for trouble.

As an aside, if anyone must still use XP there was a while ago a registry hack that made it look like an embedded device (EPOS or similar) and allowed updates to be installed. I'm not sure if that still works, as I no longer use Windows I've not bothered keeping up to date.

Linux is a kernel, not a user interface. Android has a modified Linux kernel. They are therefore "practically the same". You can make a Linux desktop look like the Android GUI if you want. Linux also has software management tools that make it as easy to use as the Play Store. So as long as there's a geek available to set everything up the user doesn't need to worry too much about what's going on beneath the surface, just point and click in the way that he's used to doing.

Which will get a lot worse when we're members of nothing. ;-)
