Why do LEDs generate heat? (2025 Update)

I remember when I was walking around at night and the power went out. There was still enough moonlight to get around (and not bump into mailboxes and other sidewalk-blockers).

I get a better signal in the woods on the farm (about 5 miles from town) than I do at home in town. This may have something to do with the fact that those woods are close to RCEC (rural electric substation).

I've had that happen in west Texas (somewhere between Waco and Abilene, not very close to either). There was no connection, the phone got hot and the battery died quickly.

Unexpectedly, I got it charged during the night and it worked fine the rest of the time I was there.

I do get some help from my 'phone company'. Using the inernet for the home phone the provider lets the phone ring one time on calls from robo calls on their list if you set it up that way. It gives free caller ID and number blocking. It will also send the call to your cell phone at the same time. All for less than the local telephone company without any of those options.

Yes I've had that too. But why can the law not set things up with phone companies to detect such things being used and shut them down?

Why would you be getting a signal from a substation?

It might instead be due to less buildings blocking the path between the cell transmitter and your phone.

The same reason the government will not stop people from using the cell phones while driving. With many of them now having a built in gps, it should be simple to set them so they would not operate about 15 to 20 miles per hour.

I believe the car companies want people to have accidents. Just think of all the cars they can sell because hey are totaled, the repair places make money, most likely the insurance companies are making money by raising the rates for those inaccidents.

I never had a problem with two numbers. I wanted people to call me on a particular phone. I could give someone my landline number or my mobile number, so they could only call the one I wanted them to call.

We have that too. Sometimes nothing happens, and if it does work it's a robot voice you can't understand.

So your system of single numbers is no good, because if I had your number, I wouldn't know if I could text it or not. In the UK it's obvious from the first two digits if it's a mobile.

Then the phone companies should allow blocking of international calls from those countries.

Why would they use robo calls? I thought robo calls were to dial 15 numbers at once and get put through to the first one to pick up. My Dr simply texts me.

I walk the dog up on the FPL right of way every night without a torch, moon or not. It really just doesn't get dark here anymore. There is far too much light scattered around from street lights and parking lots a mile or two away.

I was thinking about you guys last night sitting in the back room with the only lights on being an 11w sign bulb, 15 feet of incandescent rope light and a computer monitor happily typing away on my lighted keyboard. I think I really am a creature of the night.

It's never stopped me watching pirate films. So clearly it's broken.

Just had a look on Ebay and I can get that, but 21 inch costs a fortune.

I think the problem is legitimate businesses use robo calls that are not spam. My doctor has a robot that calls to confirm appointments and the pharmacy calls about prescriptions being ready.

Maybe they could detect calls coming in from offshore or something tho. At a certain point we should be careful what we wish for. This could become China where all incoming calls are screened and if the government has that blacklisted they don't get it. Same with the internet.

Who the hell buys a TV that small? Monitors go up to about 21", TVs start at about 28".

Why on earth would you want to be pestered by such a call? Do you not have emails and texts over there?

All I would like is for the phone companies to give you options - block certain types of calls, or from certain countries. For example, if you only know people in your own country and 2 others, you could block calls from every other country in the world. No more spam.

I guess you do not have the equal of a reverse 911 number where many in the town will get a call if there is an emergency going on. Or maybe a school is closing eailry due to say a loss of water or electricity.

There are many types of calls that are just referred to as ROBO calls.

I'm in a valley with 2000' mountains. Lots of rain and f*ck all signals. But the UK government subsidised wired broadband recently so almost everyone has fibre now at about 50Mbits.

We even have broadband in the Orkney Isles. They shoved dishes over there for satellite access, or line of sight microwave to the mainland, I can't remember which.

Then I wish I lived there, I love peace and quiet. Even if I go hillwalking, there's usually a stream of what looks like ants walking up the path ahead.

Why has America not populated as densely as the UK?

There are many older people that do not know how to use either. I have no problems with computers and electronics. My wife does not know how to text or even get a computer to start up. We are both over 65.

It is not as old. The US has many states larger than England. I bet New York has about that ratio.

We are working on the population problem. Bunches of people are comming in every year from the Mexico border.
