Why do LEDs generate heat? (2025 Update)

Sure they do... I had a '62 Sprite. That was the year after the Bugeye's were remodeled so it had a slightly larger engine and the same inadequate brakes. It was a convertible of sorts, meaning putting the top up was sort of like erecting a tent. You dug the frame out of the boot, and slipped into sockets, spread the canvas over the frame and snapped it down. Then you got out the side windows, which were held on the doors with two large, knurled screws. If you anticipated bad weather it was slightly better than a bike. At least you weren't eating raindrops at 70 mph.

It was a fun car. My brother in law was riding with me when he asked how it handled. I did a bootlegger and his response was a very quiet 'Oh.'

That was the main selling point of those little brit cars. They did do well in tight turns. The whole gymkhana sport came up around them (a mad mouse sort of course set up in a big parking lot). Occasionally some guy would show up in a Corvette and just embarrass himself.

Bloody hell, I have enough trouble just fitting rawl plugs. Why is it when the plug says to use an 8mm drill, that the plug won't fit into the drilled hole, or is sometimes loose?

That sounds really confusing. Why does the USA allow you to mix up numbers like that? In the UK it's very easy to know what you're calling, by looking at the first two digits.

How do you know for example if you're able to text someone? You can't text landlines....

And why aren't robo diallers illegal? They should be very easy to detect.

Er.... there's a big difference - TVs tend to be way bigger. So not the same LCD panels.

My eyes work great in the dark too, but they are also fine with bright light. I knew someone who actually couldn't see in the dark at all, it was quite amusing. With moonlight, a torch was required or they'd fall over stuff. God knows how night driving worked.

Someone told me there is a service that will change text to voice and call you but my neighbor just texted me and I didn't get it. Maybe you have to sign up or something.

Good question but I am not sure how they enforce it since most are in the 3d world. Part of the problem is legitimate businesses use robo calls like when the drug store says your prescription is ready or they call to have you confirm a dr's appointment

They are in the sizes that do both. TVs started being a monitor when they put VGA ports on the back and now newer monitors use HDMI but that is more about copyright protection than anything else. They just don't tell you DRM hardware is in the HDMI standard

I switched to Google Voice using an Obihai.    You can talk and text and it's free.  One number rings both house phone and smartphone.  Did I mention it's free?

Why do you UKers make it so difficult and expensive?

What you're doing sounds more complicated to me. I pick one simple device. A mobile or a landline. One single number, no faffing about.

It was fun watching the Corvettes and Lotus Sevens at Limerock. The Vettes would take off down the straight like a Saturn booster. Then it got twisty and the Sevens would pass as the Vettes wallowed around. Rinse and repeat lap by lap.

The original Minis were no slouches either with a few after market enhancements. Like a 1600cc Cosworth Ford engine.

How can you be that far out of town and get a good 4G signal? You seem to have great mobile coverage over there and s*it wired broadband. Is most of America really flat so the mobile signals travel further? Because my nearest mast is in the next town, 2 miles away, yet here I get f*ck all signal. Voice calls are not that good quality, and internet is almost unusable.

If you shine a laser or torch at an aircraft for half a second, how could they have time to notice you and track you?

I doubt they would even care if it was only a half second. You could easily say it was just an accident. They go after people who are tracking the aircraft with a laser and it is usually a helicopter that has a glass window in the bottom. Occasionally we will have an airliner captain complain but that is usually on final approach pretty close to the airport. At 30,000 feet, they are not even going to notice a laser unless you have something more than a laser pointer. You could never hold it on the plane long enough to bother them, if you could hit it at all. They are moving about 800 feet per second. That is a bullet out of a .45 ACP pistol, 7 or 8 miles away if you are at a low enough angle to get in the cockpit.

The nearest tower is about 6 miles as the crow, or radio signals, travel and it's a straight shot. My former ISP had a radio link, not the cell network, on a mountain. Unfortunately there was an intervening ridge so I didn't have anything close to line of sight.

This valley is surrounded by mountains that are up to 5000' above the valley floor so mobile coverage is a crap shoot. Wired broadband is the same deal. There never was a reason to run cable to sparsely populated sections.

Cell coverage is about the same. Towns are good and the interconnecting highway corridor are usually okay. Get off the beaten path and it's sparse. Even the tower that's 6 miles away is relatively new but it's next to an area that was subdivided into fairly dense single family homes. Before that I was hitting one a little over 8 miles away.

The UK has 710 people per square mile, this state has 7. That's a little deceptive since there's nothing in the eastern part of the state except antelope and prairie dogs but it still doesn't encourage a lot of infrastructure building outside of the towns. There are quite a few places where I camp or hike where I turn the phone off or it will drain the battery looking for a non-existent tower.

This was the only place in North Carolina where cell service wasn't spotty
