That might be the case for an American aircraft carrier with 5,000 sailors on-board. Modern container ships operate on minimum staff. There is no reason not to have a button on the bridge to cut power. Everything is fly-by-wire on a gigantic container ship like that.

When piloting a ship to navigate a channel to avoid underwater obstacles, the most efficient way is for the pilot to personally turn the wheel instead of the pilot telling another person to turn the wheel.

This ain't WWII. Everything is fly-by-wire now. The control room of a container ship can control everything just from that room.

Harbour pilots are way more skilled at steering ships than any seagoing helmsman ever would be. Plus they are extremely familiar with their turf.

The return of power was probably the emergency lighting generator(s) kicking in. They will not provide propulsion, just lighting, hence they wouldn't/couldn't prevent s*it happening.

See above. The delay in the return to power would indicate emergency systems coming into action. Those emergency generators don't always have an instant startup. That said, I have worked in places where the emergency generators started within seconds of a power outage and could go to full power and speed from cold.

Unlikely. That's not how ship engines are started and stopped.

The pilot cannot be blamed if the ship has no propulsion. No propulsion equals no steering. It would be worse heading downriver on an outgoing tide. You really have no clue about how ships operate, eh?

Correction, the rudder *might* have been working Had power resumed) but would be ineffective when the ship has lost propulsion and drifting. Tides can worsen matters greatly. For instance, an outgoing tide would mean the ship drift and the water flow might match - result - no steerage at all.

Yup, no propulsion = no steerage regardless of whether the rudders themselves can be physically actuated.

At least you used the word "eventually". Ships don't pivot very fast and the anchor would help stop for forward motion until about stopped. Then the currents take over and eventually it will swing around.

Once stopped, they can pull the anchor up and drift with the currents if that is better at the tine and position.

The only reasonable explanation for the ship suddenly jerking to the starboard side is that the anchor had snared the sea bottom and the anchor chain was thus pulling on the right hand side of the bow, because reportedly the ship had deliberately dropped the anchor.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. A ship's propeller can spin backward, just like your car tire can spin backward when in reverse gear. Are you really that dumb, or merely trying to drive up your number of posts to catch up to Peeler's?
