OT: Car Radio Does Not Mute for Factory Nav Spoken Turn Directions

The Entune Audio System radio in my late model Toyota Avalon Limited does not mute when the factory Nav system gives spoken turn by turn directions- thus making them hard to hear/understand them.

Dealer can't fix and CSR at Toyota Motor Sales USA says this feature is not available on my car (which is their flagship sedan).

Does your radio mute for directions?

Are they feeding me a line-- or did they drop the ball when they designed the system?

My Genesis even has a volume selector for it in the setup. My 2013 Sonata had a mute too. It was not 100%, but maybe reduced by 75% when the nav came on. I'd certainly think Avalon could do that.

What does it state in the manual? I can't speak for that vehicle specifically but most allow volume setting for Nav, phone and other misc. overrides.

There's an adjustment for the spoken directions volume but the manual says nothing about muting the radio for them. I've gone thru every item in the on-screen menus numerous times and can't find anything to mute or reduce radio volume.

The radio does mute for phone calls and voice commands- just not for spoken directions :-(

The Toyota explanation sounds bogus to me, but . . . Dealing with engineers and the accountants might be a possible explanation for an apparent f**kup.

No rhyme or reason for a lot of things the auto manufacturer's do.

We have both a 2016 Honda Odyssey Elite and a 2016 Honda Pilot Elite. Same, top end, trim level on each. Both have OEM GPS. Odyssey is by Navtec (IIRC) and Pilot is by Garmin. Different features with each system. (I prefer the Garmin, BTW) as well as different steps to go through with the voice activation but BOTH of them mute whatever segment of the entertainment system happens to be running at the time the GPS provides direction. If there is a way to adjust the relative difference in volume when directions are given, I haven't been able to find it. That said, the difference is such that there's really no need. Sufficient muting of the entertainment system is always present.

Your best bet, Wade, would be to get this question answered by someone who owns the same model year Avalon (and trim level if there are varying trim levels). It's either a stupid omission by Toyota or somebody is lying to you about your defective audio system.

A quick and dirty Google search seems to indicate that Toyota has been dropping the ball on this for several years.

You need a toyota forum, preferably Toyota Avalon. Unfortunately they are all on the web and none on Useent. It's inefficient but they will email you when someone replies and it's what you need to answer your question.
