The shape of the current flow through a 3 dimensional object like a tub of water will NOT be a single straight line like in a wire.

It will spread out and be more like those lines of iron filings you see around a magnet.

MOST of the current will take a shorter path.

However, SOME of the current will spread out and flow along the longer paths.

Considering that it takes only about 50 mA, that is 0.050 Amps, to clamp your muscles, you do not want to be anywhere in the tub when there is any significant current flow through the water. GFIs trip at around 5 mA.

I know a guy who had lightning hit his barn. Totally damaged the barn wiring. But it also travelled thru the wires into his house. He had copper water pipes which were bonded to the house breaker panel. One long straight pipe had an elbow. Oddly enough, the lightning must've shot straight down the pipe and burned a hole in the elbow. Water was shooting out that elbow, and the hole was an obvious burn hole. looked like someone touched it with a welding rod. I can only guess the lightning didnt follow the 90 deg turn, it just blew right thru that elbow. I ended up fixing that pipe for him, and eventually helping him replace the barn wiring.

You can put a good bit of current through an infinite number of parallel paths.

In this case you have two 3D objects, the tub water and a human, which is a bag full (70%) of salty water.

In the case of our friend who died , the breaker did not trip.

Well, there are a couple of folks at least whom we are unable to ask if fair elections are a reality in Russia. Putin had them killed. Oh and Putin was the one that said he wanted the old ways back, so free and fair elections and free economy and some other things are have likely not ever been realized by the entire nation. Probably a more classed society now than it ever was. Are there still street sweepers walking the streets with brooms and trash cans?
