Collision detection

Anyone who requires the aid of a warning system is obviously not paying attention and shouldn't be driving.

Agreed. Ditto for anyone who requires a seatbelt.

I did and misstated. It was not relevant to reaction time. Point is it is much easier to measure time before you would reach where the other vehicle is than remembering so many car lengths at various speeds.

Times I might need calculus, I don't remember any of it and I had a technical career. Never needed it.

That may be true but with no automatic action a collision is inevitable so you take your chances and hope there is no 40 tonner behind but he may be smarter than you and has already slowed. . You still get some alert and can possibly take evasive action.

Moral of the story: Pay attention. Look out the window once in a while

Precisely. Not that the egotists posting here have thought of that. Or indeed, much of anything, other than the overwhelming desire to get in front of the person in front of them, skipping over the fact that there's someone in front of them, too, for mile after mile after mile. Driving on the public highway is not a race, not a contest. The only thing you gain by driving like a dick is the scorn of those around you. If you want to drive like that, go racing. Where you will promptly discover that you can't drive for shit.

It's easier just to use you judgement to know how far back you should be.

You don't need calculus for the above.

What a load of s**te you post. I can get from Central Scotland to London 2 hours sooner than a driver who obeys the law.

Instead of at your speedo and all the motorway bridges for pigs. Remove all speed cameras, increase attention and safety dramatically. Speed cameras don't make people drive slower, they distract them.

You'll be the first one to the scene of the accident too.

Accidents happen due to lack of attention or lack of skill, nothing to do with speed.

Don't get me started on that one.

Shit! Too late.

I find it amazing how our state requires seat belts but several years ago banned the law for motorcycle helmets. It's all about revenues and they prove it with their "Click it or ticket" enforcement. I have never worn a seat belt and never will.

You surprise me. I thought I was the only non-seatbelt wearer left. Mind you, when I hitchhike I often encounter lorry drivers who don't bother, and about 1 in 3 of the people I pick up don't wear one when they see I'm not.

I know. Just a comment.

You know I was involved in a head on collision on your side of the pond. Everyone wore seat belts and nobody was hurt but I think both cars were totaled. I was not driving. Harrowing for me, as colleague actually born in the UK but forgot where he was, could not get another rental and I had to drive the rest of the way from London to York.

I was also involved in one where I was driving but a woman had turned in front of me and there was nothing I could do. I had on a seat belt and airbag went off. I was OK but woman was hospitalized. My car was totaled.

Funny, I've always avoided anything that needed a seatbelt.

I was pulled over many years ago and at that time, not wearing a seat belt was a secondary offense. That means cops couldn't pull you over just for that alone, they needed a primary offense then see if you weren't wearing the belt. The cop noticed I wasn't wearing my belt and reminded me he could write a ticket. I told him go ahead cause I'm never wearing the damn thing and continued my rant about big daddy trying to tell adults how to live their lives and blah blah blah. He let me finish my rant and said "I agree with you" and he didn't write a ticket. The original offense of speeding was let go with a warning. Ya see, not all cops are bad.

If I have a passenger, I tell them to either use it or click it behind them on the seat just to avoid hearing that stupid seat belt reminder.

The VW Tiguan has pedestrian monitoring. It will automatically brake if the driver doesn't respond to someone walking into its path.

Not always possible, most obviously when someone heading in the opposite direction to you manages to swerve onto your side of the road for some reason with no warning. Yes, that doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

In your case feel free to never wear a seatbelt, we need some Darwinian selection back in the system.

Clearly you've never driven on the M25. Lane discipline went out the window years ago and undertaking is the norm in the rush hour.

I'm sure there's logic in there somewhere but I'm buggered if I can figure it out. Are you saying tailgating makes the person in front slow down? Err no, it doesn't. Not unless they're obnoxious old men who want to make a point.

Meanwhile someone just went up the inside passing those 10 cars and pulled in a gap in front of them. You think I'm exaggerating? Try the M40 to the M1 section of the M25 during the evening rush. Its an eye opener.
