There have been some tv ads for Carshield lately. It offers extended warranties for vehicles with up to 200,000 miles. That seems hardly worthwhile considering how long vehicles last nowadays.

I hand out on an automotive forum. Some people pay a hefty $2500 or more for warranty. Given the cost of a transmission, it would be good but in 60 years I've only ever paid for one trans repair and it was not that much.

My son had a Nissan he bought new. Transmission went out at 135,000 miles. That model had a bad type of transmission and was origionally factory warrented for 60,000 miles. They extended it to 120,000 and would not do anyting for my son. Cost him about $ 4000 to get it repaired.

If he paid the above $2500 premium for a 2 years, the insurance would be a bust.

I got a quote of $450/year for extended warranty insurance. My car is 16 years old, bought new. So far repairs are under $50. Not $50 a year, $50 since I bought it.

Only buy insurance for losses you can't afford.

Virtually all of those home warrantees are TOTAL ripoffs - just like better than half of automotive extennded warrantees - almost all of the "third party" ones

If you check out the history of complaints, there are a whole lot of them. Like people with a busted car, sitting at the repair shop, the shop can't get a response, an OK from the warranty company, they require an inspector look at it first, but no inspector comes, etc, etc, etc. It's also interesting that if you look at the disclaimers, Carshield is not the actual warranty company, it only markets the plans and another company actual runs the warranty. My first thought on that kind of thing is that it's what shysters do to protect themselves. Money comes into company A, but then your claim is with company B.

Another thing that remains a mystery and seems like it could be false advertising is that the TV ads say you can take your car to any shop, even the dealer, when it needs to be repaired. But what if the shop or dealer says that to fix this right it will cost $1000 and CS says we will only pay $500? I wonder how much they charge per month for a warranty on a five year old car with 100K miles? IMO, you'd be better off putting that money aside and covering the repairs yourself. You could get lucky, if say the transmission goes six months after you start, I guess you'd come out way ahead. Those TV ads also say, "John's tranny went and he saved $3000". But that's not really true, they paid out $3000, but he only really saved whatever they paid minus all his premiums. And averaged over all their customers, that number is negative or they would have no profits, no money to pay for all those expensive TV ads either.

The one time we bought extended warranty on a car we regretted it . Total warranted repairs were way less than the cost of the warranty .
