I'm trying to figure out if spending almost two grand on attic insulation is actualy a smart move or if I'm just throwing money away. I’ve heard that blowing in more cellulose to reach R-54 is the gold standard, but I’m seeing conflicting info on wheather that actually balances out the temperture between floors. There's also the issue of my rafter vents being a total mess. A few of them are defintely blocked and some are just flat out missing, and I'm not sure if a regular insulation contractor handles those repairs or if that’s a separate roofing thing. Does fixing the ventilation actually help with the heating costs, or is that just to prevent ice dams? I'm hoping to see a decent drop in my monthly bill to justify the cost, maybe something like 25% if I'm lucky, but I don't want to get my hopes up if my old windows are the real problem instead.

I also took the advice to get an attic hatch cover, wich stopped that last draft. My gas bills dropped even more than I hoped, hitting that 25% goal easily. If you're on the fence, just do it.
