My brother and I are finally getting around to pouring this 8x14 pad for a new shed kit this weekend, but I'm starting to second-guess our mix design. We went with 4000 PSI air-entrained concrete and added fiber reinforcement since we’re worried about some minor flooding in the back corner of the yard. We also used traffic bond for the base becuase that’s all the local nursery had in stock. Does that sound like a solid plan for a shed, or are we just throwing money away on a mix that's too heavy-duty for a lawn tractor and some storage? It’s been about fifteen years since we actually finished any flatwork, so the nerves are defintely kicking in. We’ve got the 2x6 forms set up and used fiberglass rebar on chairs to keep everythign positioned right, but I'm wondering about the ramp section. Since the slab is sitting a few inches above grade to stay out of the water, we added a small notched area for a slope. Is there anything special we need to do with the fiber mix to make sure the ramp finish doesn't end up looking like a hairy mess once we broom it?

That 4000 PSI mix with air is defintely overkill for a shed, but it's the right kind of overkill if you're dealing with freeze-thaw cycles and potential water pooling. The air entrainment is what actualy protects the slab from scaling when that moisture sits and freezes. Since you're using fiber, the biggest headache is going to be the finish on that ramp. When you broom it, the little plastic or nylon hairs tend to stand up and look like a fuzzy mess. The trick is to wait untill the concrete has set up just enugh that your thumb barely leaves an indent, then hit it with a torch quickly after it dries or just let the sun bake them off over a few weeks. Make sure you cut those form stakes down below the level of your 2x6s before the truck arrives. If they’re sticking up, your screed board is going to catch every single one of them and ruin your leveling rhythm. For the ramp section, you relly need to tool a deep **control joint** right where the ramp meets the main pad. If you don't, the diffrent thicknesses and weight distribution will cause a nasty spiderweb crack right at the transition point within the first year. Traffic bond packs down tight, but it doesn't drain as well as clean stone like CA7. Since you're worried about flooding, make sure your grade falls away from the slab on all sides so water doesn't just sit under that traffic bond and turn it into mush. Also, don't over-work the surface with a steel trowel if you're doing an exterior broom finish; you'll just pull too much cream to the top and weaken the wear surface. One or two passes with the wood or magnesium bull float is plenty before you let it bleed and then pull your broom.
I’m pretty new to this, so I’m still trying to figure out the terminology. You mentioned letting it 'bleed'—does that just mean water coming to the top? How do you know when that's done so you don't mess up the broom finish? Also, I’ve only ever seen people use that heavy steel mesh for reinforcement. Does using that fiberglass rebar change how they need to tie it togehter or support it on those chairs? Just curious if it's easier to handle for a DIYer compared to the metal stuff.
I used fiberglass rebar on my last shop floor and the biggest thing I learned is that stuff is light—it wants to float right to the top when you start vibrating or screeding. Zip-tie it tight to those chairs and maybe add a few extra ones so it doesn't bow up while you're pouring. For that ramp, keep your mix on the stiffer side. If it's too wet, the weight of the main slab will push the mud out and your ramp will keep 'growing' or slumped out at the bottom while you're trying to finish it. I had to sit there and keep pulling it back up with a shovel until it finally set.
The fiber definitely leaves those whiskers, but you can minimize it by brooming in one single pass toward you. If you saw the broom back and forth to 'fix' the texture, you're just pulling those plastic hairs out of the cream and making the torching job twice as hard later. One thing about the fiberglass rebar that gets missed: keep your heavy gloves on. Those bars can shed tiny glass splinters when you’re wrestling them into the chairs or cinching ties, and you relly don’t want to be dealing with itchy hands while you’re trying to time your finish.
