Is there a standard clearance for a squash box in a garage slab?

We're getting ready to pour the slab for a new garage addition and the plumber just finished setting up the squash boxes for the drain lines. I was looking at the way they framed them out and it seems like they're taking up a lot more space than I expected. Is it normal for these to be nearly twice the diameter of the actual pipe? I'm worried about the structural integrity once we pull the forms and fill it back in. Usually I see people just sleeve the pipes with some foam or cardboard but these are full timber boxes. It looks solid but I'm second-guessing if this is overkill or if I'm missing something about the clearance needed for future repairs. The lead guy said it's to allow for settling, but the soil here is pretty packed down already. Just want to make sure I'm not overthinking it before the truck shows up tomorrow morning. It just seems like a lot of empty space to manage right where the load is going to be.


Timber squash boxes are standard practice when you want absolute certainty that your rough-in doesn't shift or crack during the concrete placement. The size—which often looks excessive—isn't just for settling; it’s about having enough room to actualy work if a pipe gets bumped out of alignment or if you need to adjust the **trap arm** height later. Foam sleeves are okay for simple penetrations, but a full box gives you a clean, square pocket to work in once the slab sets. Regarding your concern about structural integrity, once the concrete is cured and you pull those forms, you’ll usually backfill that void with gravel and then cap it off with a **non-shrink grout** or a seperate concrete patch. Since it’s a garage, your main load is likely vehicle tires. As long as those boxes aren't positioned directly under where a heavy structural column or a lift post is going, you won’t have any issues with the slab's strength.

The lead guy is right about the settling, too. In areas with high clay content or even just well-packed fill, soil can still shift slightly over time. That extra space lets the pipe move a fraction of an inch independently of the floor rather than being snapped off by the weight of the concrete. It looks like alot of wasted space now, but it’s a lot cheaper than having to jackhammer a finished floor becuase a fitting cracked four inches below the surface. It might feel like overkill compared to a thin wrap of foam, but it’s a sign of a crew that’s been burned before and wants to do it right. Just make sure they actually pull the lumber out before they do the final patch. Leaving wood in the ground is just asking for termite issues or rot that creates a real void later on. Other than that, you’re looking at a solid setup.

I just started helping out on a residential site and haven't seen anything this heavy duty yet! It’s awesome to see how solid those timber boxes look compared to the thin foam stuff we used last week. Since they're using full wood for those boxes, does that change what kind of mix you need for the slab itself? Like, do you have to use a specific aggregate size so the concrete flows around the corners better without leaving air pockets? I’m still learning the ropes and everythign looks so much bigger in person than in the manuals!

Totally agree, that's a pro move. Having that extra room is a lifesaver if you're installing a floor drain that needs to be perfectly flush with the finished floor slope later. One small thing the other guy missed though—check if they wrapped those boxes in poly or used a release agent. If you don't slick those boards up, the concrete bonds to the wood grain and you'll be fighting those forms with a wrecking bar for hours once it sets. It's the difference between a five-minute pull and a half-day headache.

One must also account for the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the slab during the pour, wich necessitates that those oversized timber boxes be sufficiently braced internally to prevent bowing or failure of the formwork itself. I would additionally verify that the lumber utilized isn't high-moisture 'green' stock, as the subsequent shrinkage of the wood can occasionally leave a minute gap that complicates the later application of your sealant if you aren't meticulous about the substrate preparation. Make sure the top of the box is set slightly proud of the finished floor level to avoid any inadvertent over-pour that might encapsulate the timber, making removal a significantly more arduous task.

Seen plenty of guys try to save a buck with cardboard tubes only to have the pour crush 'em flat. Back in the 70s, we’d just knock togather some scrap 2x8s and soak 'em in old motor oil so they’d pop right out the next morning. Those boxes look big, but wait til you're trying to set a floor drain and you've only got a half-inch of wiggle room—you'll be cursing the man who didn't give you space.

Just make sure they pack that void with damp sand before they cap it. Seen too many people dump dry dirt in there that eventually settles and leaves the pipe hanging in mid-air after a few seasons of vibration.
