My wife just got a new dryer and it got me looking at our panel setup. We’ve lived here twenty years and it’s always worked fine, which makes me wonder if I'm overthinking the safety aspect. I've seen some debates about whether you relly need that physical handle tie or if the internal trip is what matters most. Some people seem to think it’s a major hazard if one side trips and the other doesn't, while others say if it hasn't burned the house down in two decades, it's probably okay. Is it worth the hassle of swapping them out for a joined double-pole breaker just to be safe, or is this just one of those code things that doesn't make much of a real-world difference? I ran into this exact same setup in my 1970s split-level when we moved in. The previous owner had two individual GE slim breakers shoved in there for the dryer. While it worked for years, the big issue is that if one leg of that 240v circuit trips and the other doesn't, you end up with a "half-live" machine. If the breaker protecting one hot wire pops but the other stays closed, the motor might stop, but there is still live current sitting inside the appliance. If your new dryer has sensitive electronic boards, that unbalanced voltage can sometimes fry them. Plus, if you ever go to work on the outlet thinking the power is off because the dryer isn't spinning, you could get a nasty surprise from the leg that's still hot. For the sake of a fifteen-dollar double-pole breaker, I’d definitely swap them out before the delivery truck arrives. It ensures both legs shut off at the same time every time. It’s one of those small fixes that gives you peace of mind, especially with a brand new appliance on the line.

The internal trip mechanism on modern breakers is independent, but on these old ones, they just sit side-by-side. If it’s been working for twenty years, your bus bars are probly fine. If you do decide to swap it, just make sure you get a dedicated double-pole breaker designed for your specific brand of panel so the footprint matches perfectly, but don't lose sleep over it tonight.
Spot on about the safety hazard. I’ll add that without that common trip, you can actualy backfeed the dead leg through the heating element or the motor windings. If one side trips, the 'dead' wire can still be carrying 120v through the load of the dryer itself. It’s a sneaky way to get shocked even when you think the circuit is half-dead. definitly grab a dedicated double-pole breaker so you have that internal common trip mechanism, not just a handle tie.
Don't forget that if those breakers aren't tied, they might not even be on diferent phases. If someone slapped 'em in right next to each other on certain panel types, you'd get zero volts across the hots and the dryer won't even heat up. Since it's been workin' fine, they're prolly on the right tabs, but I'd swap 'em just so you don't accidentally move one later and kill your heat. It's a cheap fix to keep from pullin' your hair out when the new unit won't get the towels dry.
I had this same thing in my last place and didn't think twice about it untill I went to swap the outlet. I flipped what I thougt was 'the' breaker, but the dryer light stayed on. It took five minutes to pop in and it's way better than guessing wich switch kills what when you're elbow-deep in a junction box.
Quick update—that point about backfeeding through the heating element relly opened my eyes. I confirmed they’re on diferent phases since the old unit heats up fine, but my panel is so packed that swapping to a full double-pole is proving difficult. If I just add a physical handle tie to these existing breakers, woud that actualy fix the safety issue, or is an internal common trip the only way?
