I ended up using a hollow 6-inch square column kit I found at a local millwork shop that matched our shaker cabinets. Getting the 12/2 Romex through the ceiling joists was the hardest part, expecially since I had to fish it through a narrow gap in the insulation. Instead of the pop-up outlets, I installed a few Hubbell under-counter receptacles right under the granite overhang. It keeps the countertop looking seamless, wich was a big deal for my wife. One thing I learned the hard way is to make sure you anchor that support post to the island framing with some heavy-duty L-brackets or GRK screws. If it’s just surface-mounted, it’ll wiggle every time someone leans on the island. My inspector was mostly concerned about the GFCI protection, so I just swapped the breaker for a dual-function AFCI/GFCI to keep things safe.

It actualy includes its own metal back box to protect the wiring inside the cabinet, so you don't have to worry about your heavy cast iron pans banging into the electrical guts. For that 20-amp run, I always pull Southwire Romex Simpull becasue it doesn't snag as much when you're fishing it down from the ceiling thru tight spots.
