I’ve spent way too much time cleaning out paver joints becasue I used the cheap stuff from the big box stores that just turns to mush after one rain. The trick to getting that rock-hard finish that actualy keeps the ants and weeds out is all in the prep and the compaction. You can't just brush it in and call it a day or you'll end up with a loose sandy mess the second it gets wet. I learned the hard way that you need to rent a plate compactor with a pad to realy vibrate that sand down into the base of the joint. Doing it in layers is the only way it stays solid. I usally run the compactor over the empty pavers first, then sweep in the sand, and run the machine again to settle it. If you don't vibrate it, you get these tiny air pockets that collapse during the first storm, making it look like the sand failed. Make sure you use a leaf blower to get every single grain of dust off the surface before you mist it with water. If you leave a film, it turns into a hazy white mess that’s a nightmare to scrub off later. Give it at least 48 hours to cure before you let anyone walk on it, and don't panic if the very top layer feels a little gritty after a downpour; as long as the joint itself is solid, you're golden.

I used a rented Wacker Neuson with a poly-pad on my 600-square-foot driveway last summer. You’re spot on about the vibration. Without that plate compactor, the Alliance Gator Max G2 sand I used wouldn't have settled deep enough. I noticed the joints dropped nearly half an inch after the first pass, which was a real eye-opener. If I hadn't gone back for a second fill, those joints would have been half-empty. One thing I did differently was the watering process. I found that a super fine mist can actually dry out before it hits the bottom of a deep joint, especally if it's over 85 degrees out. I ended up using a light shower setting on my nozzle after the initial misting to make sure the moisture actually penetrated all the way down. I was terrified of washouts, but as long as you don't have standing water, it seems to bond much better.
It’s been over a year now trough a rough winter and the joints are still rock solid. No ants or those annoying little sprouts coming through. The extra rental fee for the compactor was easily the best money I spent on the whole project.
I’m just starting to look into doing my own walkway and I had no idea about the plate compactor part. I honestly thougth you just used a broom and called it a day, so I'm glad I saw this before I started! If I rent one of those machines, do I need to worry about it cracking the pavers? I don't want to break anything by being too aggressive. Also, for the watering part, how can you tell if the moisture acutally made it to the bottom of the joint without making a huge mess on top?
To answer the worry about cracking pavers: the poly-pad is non-negotiable. I tried using a piece of old carpet once because the rental shop was out of pads, and it was a disaster. The rubber pad absorbs the shock so the pavers don't shatter.
Also, check your weather window like a hawk. I made the mistake of rushing it when there was a 30% chance of rain. A surprise thunderstorm hit four hours after I finished, and it washed the polymer right out of the joints before it could set. Now I don't even start unless I've got a guaranteed 72-hour dry spell. If it rains too early, you're back to square one with a sticky mess.
