I have spent way too many hours staring at my Samsung top-loader trough that glass lid, just waiting for it to finish a spin cycle that never ends. If you are struggling with the constant DC errors or find your clothes are still soaking wet after an hour, the first thing you need to check is the suspension rods. These machines are notorious for the springs wearing out early, wich makes the tub bounce like crazy even with a small load of darks. I actually just swapped the suspension rods on my WA50R5400AW last month after the DC error code drove me to the brink of buying a whole new set. You are spot on about the springs. When I pulled the old ones out, the dampening grease was basically gone, and the rods were visibly thinner than the new OEM replacements I ordered. It took about forty minutes with a helper holding the tub, but the difference is night and day. No more "bang-bang-bang" against the side casing during the rinse cycle. One thing I found with the leveling is that even a tiny fraction of an inch off makes the vibration sensors go haywire. I used a 2-foot Empire level across the top of the machine and discovered my laundry room floor has a slight slope toward the drain. Instead of just turning the feet, I ended up putting some heavy-duty rubber vibration pads under the front legs. It keeps the machine from walking across the linoleum when I am washing heavy jeans or wet towels.
I have to disagree slightly on the bedding cycle, though. On my specific model, that setting seems to use way too much water, which actually makes the balance worse if I do not have enough heavy items to soak it all up. I have had better luck using the "Activewear" cycle for mixed loads because it has a more gradual ramp-up to the high spin speed. It gives the clothes a better chance to distribute themselves before the drum really starts flying.
I had no idea washers even had suspension rods untill I read this. I've just been letting mine 'walk' across the floor beacuse I thougth that’s just what top-loaders did. How do you actually know if the rods are the problem versus just having an uneven floor? I don't own a carpenter's level or anything. Also, where do you even buy those rubber pads? I'm worried that if I try to open the machine up myself, I might mess up the electronics or something. Is it realy as easy as you say for someone who isn't very handy?
You’re absolutely right about those suspension rods being the culprit for the DC code. I’ll add one thing though—when you’re in there, check the plastic bushings where the rods seat into the frame. Most people swap the rods but forget to wipe out the old, gritty residue from those cups and add a dab of fresh lithium grease. If those seats aren't slick, the brand new rods can still bind up and cause that 'death wobble' even if they're perfectly springy. It makes the whole operation much quieter.
I see everyone jumping to suspension rods, but have you ruled out suds lock from using too much detergent? If those bubbles prevent the water from draining fast enugh, the weight of the lingering water can cause the exact same 'unbalanced' sensor trip even if your rods are fine. Before ripping the cabinet apart, are you sure the drain pump isn't partially clogged? A tiny obstruction in the housing or a buildup of film in the pressure tube can slow down the outflow just enough to make the spin cycle go haywire. It might be a simple drainage issue rather than a mechanical failure.
Quick update — wiping the grit out of those bushings definatly helped the noise, but I'm still fighting the DC error on my towels. I'm starting to think the suds lock point was spot on beacuse I do use alot of Tide. How much detergent do you guys actualy put in? I'm worried I've been sabotaging my own repairs with too many bubbles.
