papaya question

Hi , I told you a while back about an older man telling me about his mother making them apple pies using green papayas instead of apples . He must have been well into his nineties. So, was a very long time ago. Well I had to try it myself. Peeled a crock pot full of green papayas and I was nearly finished with them when my hands started to hurt. Felt like they were frost bitten. Especially around the nail beds. I had a hard time getting to sleep because of the pain. Still was very painful all day yesterday. But just sore this morning. Does anyone know anything about why this happened? Oh, the pie was nothing to write home about. But way back then the mother probably used what was available to feed her family. Here she probably couldn't find apples . As we can today. Was a very interesting experiment , though I'm sure I want try it again, ha. , Kate

Green papaya has a natural meat tenderizer in it and perhaps your skin is just overly sensitive to it. Hope your hands feel better soon!

Thank you for the concern. As I said, they do feel better this morning. Though very tender and sore. You could be right about the tenderizer effect being the problem. I want be trying this one again, ha. Hugs Kate

green papaya and its latex contain papain and chymopapain, which are protein cleaving enzymes; papain (from the green papaya) being the most potent.

My hands are better except for a couple of the nails. Thanks for the information. About the why. I doubt I will ever forget to be more careful , should I decide to try something like this again. Kate
