I had a similar scare with an old Mack truck running a McNeilus drum about three years ago. We were pouring a 450-square-foot patio and that grinding sound started—metal on metal, like a handful of bolts in a blender. My driver looked at me and I knew exactly what he was thinking. If that gearbox snaps while you've got five yards of wet mix in there, you aren't just looking at a bad finish; you're looking at a $40,000 drum replacement or a week of a guy inside with a chipping hammer.
I ussually look at the rollers first. If they're vibrating or bouncing, it’s usually a bearing going out. If it’s a steady clunking, I stop the pour imediately. It’s better to take the hit on a cold joint and explain it to the homeowner than to let that concrete set up inside the mixer. We ended up calling for a backup truck and used a retarder to keep the edge wet, but I won't gamble on a mechanical failure anymore. Once you hear that specific high-pitched whine from the hydraulic pump, the clock is ticking and you’re better off washing out right then.

I'm with you on checking the rollers, but you also need to look at the trunnion stand for fresh metal shavings. If you see silver dust piling up under the roller, that bearing isn't just failing—it's literally eating itself alive. I’ve seen guys mistake a loose fin bolt for a gearbox death rattle, but that trunnion dust never lies. If you see it, kill the drum immediatly before it seizes and turns your truck into a five-yard paperweight.
Check your hydraulic pressure gauge. On a Mack TerraPro with a ZF P7300 gearbox, if that needle spikes past 4,500 PSI just to turn a 4-inch slump, you’re done. That’s the planetary drive screaming. I’ve seen guys try to muscle through, but once those gears strip, you've got 8 yards of 4000 PSI mix turning into a $50,000 boulder. I always carry MasterSet R 100 retarder. If the pressure climbs, I dump the chemicals, spin it fast, and hit the washout. A cold joint is a headache, but a seized drum is a career-killer.
Update: Checking the trunnion stand for shavings was a huge tip—found a pile of silver dust just like you said. I limped it home, but now the vibration is getting more violent even without a load. Since I’m clearly looking at a failing bearing, is this somthing I can swap out myself in the yard, or do I need to get it into a shop immediatly?
