Got a 4-foot wall pour scheduled for tomorrow and I'm basially flying solo on this one. I picked up some of those plastic J-bolt holders to keep everything in place while I'm busy with the hose, since I won't have anyone else there to double-check my spacing as we go. I’ve also got my utility boxes already tied into the rebar and formwork. It feels like a ton of extra prep work, but I’m hoping it keeps things from moving around too much during the vibration. I’ve seen some guys say all these extra clips and spacers just get in the way when you're trying to get the top of the wall smooth. Do you think it's worth the time to have every bolt and box locked down before the truck arrives, or is it better to just wet-set the hardware once the concrete is in? I'm worried about things shifting if I don't have them secured, but I also don't want to be fighting my own formwork all day.

I always pre-set my J-bolts, expecially when short-handed. Wet-setting sounds easy til the truck driver is leaning on his horn and you're trying to find your tape measure while covered in mud. Those plastic holders like the ones from Simpson are helpful beacuse they keep the threads clean. If you wait until the concrete is in, you end up pushing bolts against aggregate and they never sit perfectly plumb. Regarding the utility boxes, keeping them tied to the rebar is the way to go. I once tried to float a box in a 4-foot stem wall and the vibration from the pencil vibrator sent it sideways. It took me twenty minutes with a crowbar to get it back to center while the mud was setting up. Just make sure your wire ties are tight enugh that they don't slide down the vertical bars. If you're worried about finishing around them, just keep a small margin trowel handy to work the cream around the clips. It's better to fight a little bit of finishing than to have a crooked bolt when the framers show up for the sill plates.
I’ve had better luck wet-setting the bolts using a simple 2x4 template after the wall is struck off. When you lock everything down with those plastic clips beforehand, you’re basically building a cage that traps air. If you're using a 1.5-inch vibrator, those holders and pre-tied boxes become magnets for the head to get stuck, and if you’re solo, you don't have the hands to wiggle it free while managing the pump hose. In my experience on these shorter 4-foot pours, having the top of the form clear makes screeding way faster. I usually mark my layout on the top of the forms with a Sharpie and then just drop the 1/2-inch bolts in right after the cream has risen. It ensures they are actually vertical. If the rebar shifts even a fraction of an inch under the pressure of the mud, your pre-set bolts are going to be crooked anyway, and then you're stuck drilling into the sill plate later to make it fit.
Have you ruled out the possibility of the J-bolt holders creating voids right where you need the most strength? I've seen those plastic clips trap just enough air or aggregate to leave a honeycomb pocket under the bolt head. If you're solo, you might not have the time to really work the vibrator around every single clip. Also, with those utility boxes tied so tight, are you sure the rebar won't just sag or twist the box out of plumb once the full weight of the wet mud hits it? Sometimes 'secure' just means it stays stuck in the wrong position.
I'm just starting to learn about this stuff, and the part about the vibrator getting stuck in the 'cage' sounds like a nightmare, expecially if you're alone. How do you actualy know if you've vibrated enugh around those utility boxes without overdoing it and causing a blowout? Also, is there a specific type of 'mud' mix that makes it easier to flow around all those pre-set bolts, or do you just use the standard stuff and hope for the best?
Don't sweat the finishing too much. If those clips are in the way, just tap 'em with your hammer to seat 'em deeper once the mud's level. My big worry's your mix—if you're solo, ask the driver for a 5 or 6 slump. If it's too stiff, you'll be killing yourself trying to get it around those boxes and bolts without honeycombing. Also, keep a bucket of water and a rag handy. If you spill mud on the bolt threads and it dries while you're vibrating the rest, you're gonna have a hell of a time getting nuts on later. Better to wipe 'em quick as you go.
Back in the day we just used a notched 2x4 and a prayer, but those plastic clips are alright if you don't overthink it. My advice? Check your forms twice for bracing before that truck shows up. A 4-foot wall doesn't sound like much untill the hydrostatic pressure starts singing. If you’re solo and a tie snaps or a stake pulls, you’re in for a long afternoon. I’ve seen guys get so focused on thier bolt spacing that they miss the forms bowing out an inch. Keep a sledge and some extra kickers ready just in case.
