Could anyone recommend a newsgroup, forum or other on-line resource for self-builders?

There used to be some on yahoo groups. You have to subscribe to some, others can be read online. They might be a bit quiet nowadays as the self build boom has arguably passed its peak.

There is still a fairly high incidence of spam and address hijacking on Yahoo so you might want to join with a throwaway email address and a spoof ID.
