Simple. Each vehicle gets fitted with a device. Truckers have been managing fleets of hundreds the same way. They also break it down by state and pay each one accordingly.

In states with annual inspection you can pay up at inspection when they record miles.

Well, they are trailing you. Car makers can build in trackers too if the states would agree on a method.

In the past, my wife and I drove in shifts, with me doing most of the driving. Now she does most, if not all of it. I no longer do well when I'm not active and I had a seizure 18mos ago, the day before we were to drive back from Vermont to Georgia. Scary. She drove all the way back.

Yes, I saw that happen. Management explained that the salary scale would self-correct and if that wasn't good enough, there's the door. You might just get paid more in a new job, which was probably true in the short term. It might have been more of a problem to find the same working conditions though.

Yep. It has to self-correct though. It may take a year or two but those hired "today" will feel the same way "tomorrow". I know a few who jumped jobs every year or two to "get ahead". That may work for a while but being a perpetual newbie tends to make one unemployed at some point. No one wants someone who doesn't stay around long enough to become productive. As you say, it's just a fact of life.

I lived in eastern Ohio for a year (temp job). I didn't find the Akron/Kent area particularly cheap. It certainly wasn't California but they weren't giving houses away either. Cars and food costs about the same, too.

I wouldn't take it, if it were free. Too much chance of *major* structural damage. Of course buying it as a tear-down might make sense.

I paid somewhat North of $1K/mo. in Akron. That probably is less than your property taxes. ...one of the major reasons I moved out of the Northeast.

Anything sharp from HF sucks, big time. I think they make drill bits out of pencils.

It would be simple enough for the state to issue a GPS unit if your car was too old to have one.

Sure but most I have no idea where they come from. They're not logged either.

There isn't anything. I have an add-on Garmin GPS (and WiFi backup camera) that displays messages but it doesn't show these.

If my car told me to check the transmission fluid every time I drove into the driveway, it wouldn't take me very long to completely ignore it.

Bought it today. I knew there was a AutoZone across the street from my Optometrist. ;-)bb

Oh my, I hope that you are doing well. I'm not married, but my past two girlfriends that would go on trips with me, neither had a license or much interest in driving, I've always been the sole driver. Even if they did, I doubt they'd have interest in learning to drive a standard shift.

However, I did teach my 19 year old sister how to drive a standard a few years ago. It was in a beaten up old Ranger that I owned with a clutch that was failing - not easy to shift. I took her through a parking lot for a half hour, and she drove us home. She did very well! She didn't even stall from a hill start. Her boyfriend bought a standard Jetta a year later, and she had to drive it out of the lot... he couldn't back it out of the space... haha.

In Ohio it doesn't mention front/vs back seat - but apparently my 6 year old daughter should still be in a booster... oops.

Well, none of my cars have power seat adjustments. The bucket seats recline manually and slide forward/back manually - same as most bench seats. I typically pull the headrests off of the bucket seats. It makes it far easier to see behind me without it "guiding" my head (is that a better term than "force"?). The head rests also mess up my hat and make it uncomfortable to sit while wearing it.

I'm literally minutes from the PA and WV panhandle border - East Liverpool OH. It's a fairly impoverished area, lots of poor folks. The "city" is shrinking - we have a housing surplus and plenty of houses that no one wants to fix.

I ripped into the kitchen floor in the back, the foundation and footing (partial basement) are solid, but the kitchen floor is sagging - the floor joists need to be replaced and the subfloor is rotten. Likely for the roof leak above.

I'm paying the kids across the street beer and cigarette money to gut most of it. If it turns out to not be worth fixing, I'm only out a couple hundred of dollars. Cost of lumber is going to suck.

Depends on the car - all of mine are manual odometers. I'm sure it would be quite difficult with a digital one.
