The original Dallas Cowboy, signed a couple of months before the Dallas franchise became an official reality. Pete Gent's quarterback character in the novel North Dallas Forty was said to been modeled on Meredith. But, one of my favorite anecdotes about/by Meredith was his comparative explanation of 'commitment' and 'involvement' wherein he likened them to ham and eggs. "The chicken," he said, "is involved. But the pig is committed."

Damn! Dandy Don, gone! Shit! Knocking around the world, way back when, there were two things that were a comforting force no matter where the hell you were (and could find the eerie glow of a boob tube)... Don Meredith and Monday Night football, and Johnny Carson.
