Probably won't be finished for Christmas but would make a nice project. Must taken a twisted mind to design it though.

Not "twisted" but clever. The ideas are not so difficult, it is the "engineering" to get all the latches in place, as well as the craftsmanship skills to make everything "fit" - inlays as well.
Yeah, maybe Ikea has a similar one for cheap.

It's interesting that everything still works with the expansion and contraction of wood over the years.
It would be almost as impressive to get into on flat box.
A "desk" - yes, Ikea will have something.
But the style is just to ornate to fit into the Ikea aesthetic.
Which is one of the attractions of such desks as in the article. They don't look like something you order from Office Supply Inc.
