X-Post - Phone based utility to rebroadcast an incoming message

You can set up a yahoo group that remains private and you as admin/owner invite members to join. They then opt for emails relayed out as you suggest or a daily digest, admin email only or no email at all. Emails go out to a given email address and up to them if they can see that on their phones. I run one of these for my old school year class mates and it works well. Includes file areas where members can store documents/photo albums for all members to see.

In theory it is fine but somehow it feels a bit too personal; probably because we use it for all our family chit chat. Not a logical reason, really.

The problem (opportunity) I am trying to solve is for a cycling group.

Long term planning is fine via a web forum but I'm looking for a facility where you can send, for example, "Anyone up for a 10 mile ride in 2 hours time?".

Sounds ideal for almost any kind of instant messaging application.

Whatever happened to IRC, by the way?

I'm slightly conflicted by trying to find a solution which can include older "dumb" phones and possibly also work with PCs.

More requirements capture needed, just trying to work out an initial proposal.

Be aware that SMS text on 'dumb' phones is not always instant, and can be delayed by far more than two hours.

Sounds like a shoe-in for MQTT to me. Set up a topic, publish with no retention, anyone subscribed gets messages as they come in.

You'd have to write/script something, mind.
