washing machine door

Hi, I've got a washing machine door (it's French model, "Vedette" front loader) and the door latching lever has either broken or become detached internally. I've checked the user guide but no help there. Is there any typical way of opening front loader doors when the latching mechanism fails? Thanks for any help.

Don't know if the method is transferable to other models, but when the plastic part of the latch broke on mine I found a video online that showed how to get a bit of string behind the seals and pull the remaining metal part of the latch open.

Normally is is a case of taking the top off and working the latch manually

Thanks for the replies. The landlord is sending her handyman round on Monday, and in the interim ill give these 2 methods a try. Many thanks.

Amazing what is on You Tube.

Two types of problem though - could be the handle mecheanism or it could be the delayed action latch plate inside the machine.

SWMBO broke the handle on a French washing machine door this summer in France.

The handle was a fairly flimsy plastic design and too much force, when the door was locked, did for it. Once the handle had come off it was relatively straightforward, with the aim of a torch and a pair of long nosed pliers, to find the bit of metal the handle pulled, and pull it with the pliers, releasing the door.

I've opened wm doors before with a scraper pushing the door tongue, I forget in which direction. And soemtimes nothing more than a good thump is needed.

Look on YouTube for opening a washing machine door with a piece of string. By far the simplest way (if it works).
