Underlay for laminate flooring

I used the screwfix heavy duty foam stuff in the kitchen and it was good

about the same ime.

the thin stuff is fine under compression and as you rightly point out doesn't cause as much of a height difference as the fibreboard. if you do go ahead and use the green fibreboard be sure to gaffer tape the panels together to avoid them creeping apart and causing creaks and groans of the laminate flooring. FWIW, the green fibre stuff is an excellent insulator under laminate.

Actually.... As our bedrooms are downstairs and concrete floors are completely un-insulated, I chose to use both the fibre board and the thin grey foam-on-a-roll. Foam down first and board on top. (whether it makes any difference or not which way)

Hight seems to still be not significantly different to hallway carpet/underlay.

One thing I can say is the grey foam stuff seems to insulate extremely well, to the point of it actually feeling warm under foot even when used by it's self whereas the fibreboard just wasn't as cold as the concrete.

Floor is still cold though, but that comes from having no heating on any of the ground floor........... still!

There is a third - my daughters landlord laid laminate floor over the old carpets!

I'm soon to be putting a laminate floor in the bedroom and I see there are two types of underlay available. There's thin foam sheet on a roll or there's thick green fibre boards about 2ft square I think. Not sure what the difference is costwise but I think I'd prefer the stuff on a roll simply because it's thinner and there won't be such a difference in levels between the bedroom floor and the floor on the landing. I was just worried that it might not be suitable bearing in mind the weight of the wardrobes and other furniture that will be stood on it. Any thoughts anyone?
