That was a comment on his claim about means testing, not saying that it is means tested.

Mine is taxed according to my tax code which is basically calculated from PA minus state pension.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you wouldn't. The 'you' was meant to be generic!

The tax code is a (usually fairly good) approximation that is tidied up later.

The numeric part of the code is multiplied by 10 and that's the tax free amount for that year.

That's it; the letters are merely advisory for the employer.

Emergency code means they deduct tax on all your income. Your tax code tells the provider how to calculate tax due by specifying how much of your personal allowance has not yet been taken up by other incomes such as your state pension less any allowances you may have e.g. transferable marriage allowance.

It isn't. There are a number of amounts of entitlement. It all depends on family make-up and formulation, housing costs, etc.

But for any one person, there will be a single figure if they declare their circumstances honestly and accurately.

And the "problem" of the sharp cut-off point still exists. Not just for pensioners, but for every type of claimant.

But that's not the UK.

I believe that to be the inevitable way in which occupational or other private pensions are taxed.

It certainly describes the way I get mine.

Yes, but I meant that if there was a means test, not that there is a means test.

As clear as mud.

On the basis of what you actually said, my response was 100% valid.

It is the way that means-testing is done in the UK.

Shrug...

No it wasn?t, you can't ignore the context in which it was said.

No, what was being discussed was the tax that would be paid when it *is*.

"When the state pension *is* MEANS TESTED"

No, I simply didn't bother to quote it

And it should have been "if there *were* a means test". Its plain to see Blair has destroyed the ability of anyone to convey precise meaning using the Englsish language by removing it from te curriculum.

The hit song was "If I were a rich man"

bad grammar doesn't fix itself by dint of context.

Yes, the good old conditional tense orperhaps subjunctive.

People's ability to express themselves clearly has taken a hit over the last

50 years.

The "state pension" (Retirement Pension) is not means-tested. If you qualify for it by dint of having an adequate contribution record, you get it, irrespective of any other income or resouirces you have.

Is there much point in such a discussion?

It isn't going to happen.

Or even a good socialist who wants equal rights for all. Not the Tory primary idea of making a profit from it.

Many did have occupational pensions. Pretty well all my friends and family did/do.

And when the country wasn't as rich as now.
