Quick clarification: I meant when having a message open, a one-click move to open the next, or the previous.

up/down arrows work, or n/p for next/prev unread, or b/f for back/forw regardless of read/unread

Don't think so, I leave the quick filter bar visible, then toggle the unread button.

you can open the next new message in a list by pressing N. There are probably other shortcuts I haven't found.

Of those three, only b/f works for me, which is something, so thanks. A pity that the up/down cursor keys don't have the same effect, since they would be a lot easier to remember, and for the same reason I would still prefer a clickable option in the program.

That doesn't work for me, but thanks for the thought. b and f (for back and forward) do work.

n/p will only work if there are unread messages in their direction, arrows if you're in the message list pane, I'm assuming you're not in "cards view"?

I hadn't, and there are clearly some useful key-press shortcuts there, so thanks. For this patricular function, though, I would prefer something clickable.

Interesting question. Unfortunately, such is my new-user ignorance that I've no idea if I am or not, nor am I familiar with what other views there might be, and how they differ from each other. I'll investigate.

You might want to look at the tbkeys-lite extension. It lets you set shortcuts to any key.

Given you're a new TB user, I suspect that is the default, most people who are used to a "classic" three pane view don't like cards view

Thanks very much for those examples. Interestingly, my layout is considerably simpler: I must have done some tweaking in my Usenet-only days with the program. I have just two columns: the folder pane full-height on the left, and the message pane, also full-height, on the right. Clicking on a message opens it to the whole of the window under a new tab.

This neat, uncluttered layout suits me well.

That sounds very useful; extensions is an area I've not yet investigated at all.

hit the space bar

The up/down cursor keys either move through the message being read or the list of messages, depending which has the focus.

The left and right cursor keys (when the message list window has focus), will move left or right one nested level in an expanded thread or collapse (if already fully left) or expand a thread (if already collapsed).

On my computer, pressing the up and down keys while reading one message in a thread produces no effect at all.

Depends ...

If you're reading a long message (e.g. one where nobody has trimmed previous replies) it should advance through that message, then it should advance to the next unread message, if there is one.

Unfortunately sometimes the space bar gets "stuck" and doesn't advance as it should ...

Do the cursor keys work in "troubleshoot" mode? Help | Troubleshoot mode | Restart

If they do, you've got some extension or theme interfering. You'll have to go back to normal operation and disable each one in turn to find the one responsible.

To get back to normal operation use: Help | Turn troubleshoot mode off
