Mucked something up Thunderbird

Latest version... Used only as a newsreader...

Once I have read posts in a thread, they disappear from the thread, only the unread ones show. How do I set it, so they all show, please?

I did have it highlighting my posts, and those threads which I had made a post in, how do I get that back please?

That fixed it - thanks!

Great! We have people who know how to wrangle Thunderbird.

Now for extra points, why do read posts on _some_ groups go from bold to (not-Bold) when read (as they should do) but on other groups they remain in Bold and the "Unread Post" counter in the left-hand column (with the list of subscribed groups) refuses to decrement as you read posts?

I've had this for quite a while, and still can't find a way to make it play tidy.

I had a bit of a weird issue some time ago, where I would sometimes get two copies of a post, but attributed to two authors. It may have been a server issue, because it cleared up itself..

I'll tell you when you tell me why sometimes my threads are expanded, and sometimes they are not. And clicking on the > doesn't expand them but * does?

I like mine the other way around. But I've been getting database corruptions, so threads->unread shows nothing. Leave the group, come back in, and it's forgotten the threaded and unread settings.

Repair the group, and it's OK. For a while. so I have to leave it as threads->all

Luckily the n key still gets me to the next unread post.

Is there a way to set Thunderbird so by default it shows only the unread threads for newsgroups but shows *all* email messages? As you can do in Windows Live Mail.

I know about the drawing-pin button to the left of the Unread, Starred, Contact, Tags and Attachment buttons, which makes those buttons "sticky" so they don;t reset when you change from one group to another. However if I go to one newsgroup, press Unread and then the drawing-pin button, it turns on Unread for all newsgroups and also for all email accounts.

If TB fixed that annoyance, and also allowed you to press "New Message" and then populate the To, CC, BCC field from the address book (rather than by typing and hoping that auto-complete finds the recipient) it would be a damn good mail/newsreader.

I have found unsubscribing from the group and resubscribing works. There is an issue but Thunderbird are more concerned with bells and whistles than bugs.

Hmm. This is not encouraging me to dump Turnpike when I move to the new box.

When 64 bit came along there was much discussion on how to run it in a cache? Likely to be a stretch for me:-(

To be fair Tim, me old mucker, the latest Thunderbird is a complete rewrite by and large, and it will take a year to get the bugs out. But they will. More or less. Be patient and wait.

It does for me - TB 155.4.2.

Case 1: Drawing Pin button without blue light (unselected)

  1. View a news group with "Unread" button not lit (unselected): all read/unread threads displayed
  2. Press "Unread": now only the unread (bold) threads are displayed
  3. View a different news group: "Unread" button defaults to unselected even though it was set to red fro the first group, so unread threads are displayed as well
  4. Go back to original newsgroup: unread is unselected though I had previously set to to read
  5. Likewise for email messages for email account(s) that are configured

Conclusion: If the Drawing Pin is unselected, the Unread status of a newsgroup or email account is not remembered but always defaults to show unread as well as read messages.

Case 2: Drawing Pin button is selected

  1. View a news group with "Unread" button not lit (unselected)
  2. Press "Unread": now only the unread (bold) threads are displayed
  3. View a different news group: "Unread" button now remembers how it was set for the previously-displayed newsgroup
  4. The same is true for email messages

Conclusion: If the Drawing Pin is selected, the Unread status is remembered for all news groups - but there is no way that I can find of setting all newsgroups to display only read, and yet at the same time setting all email accounts to display read and unread - it is all on or else all off.

If there is a way of circumventing this, or if your TB behaves differently to mine, I'd be interested to hear what I'm doing differently to you.

I presume you mean 115.4.2?

The current version is 115.4.3

Mine looks very different. What addons are you using?

You appear to be in "vertical view" I'd have thought most dyed in the wool TB users prefer "classic view" with left=folders, top-right=messages list and bottom-right=message content panes?

Also you have a theme applied.

Golly, whoda thunk it? </sarc>

My main point was though that none of the buttons mentioned exist on my screen And the little > icons do nothing when clicked on. Only thing that works is the asterisk.

The main difference between the two screens shown in this thread is a menu option.

view/layout/ classic or vertical

Hitting the Quick Filter button will bring up the toolbar with pin/unread/etc.

Light/Dark theme will change black text on a white background to white text on a black background.

Because you haven't got quickfilterbar enabled

Normally a button to toggle the quickfilter bar is in the main toolbar, but since you (or your theme?) have disabled the main toolbar, you can use View/Toolbars/QuickFilterBar

The twisties work OK for me (even if I swap to vertical view) are you sure your theme doesn't break them?

Can you set up the view you want without the quickfilter toolbar? If not, can you use it to set up the view then close it? I've never had a need for the QFT, and unchecked it from the "View" menu several years ago as it wasted vertical space.
