I bought a couple of 512GB micro sd cards and discovered they get very hot : 60C when being written to at 150MB/s. I was only transferring 11GB of zipped data.

Well, there are some that definitely do and some which don't. I guess it depends on how up to date they are in design. Brian
I noticed the same with a USB3 stick that I plugged into my BT Smart Hub.
I guess that is the tradeoff between speed of access and heat generation.
Are there really big operating temperature variations between makes ?

I expect it is a combination of packaging density and writing speed, micro sd card is quite small for 512GB
It depends on the mix of 1's and 0's. 1's are quite slim and are easily squashed into the Flash die. But the 0's are big and fat and weigh more so the the electronics has to work much hard squeezing the fat and heavy ones into the die.
It's basic common sense if you think about it.
