Stopping glue solvent evaporating

I have a tin of Evo-Stik Impact adhesive. The kind that comes in a tin with a lever off lid. Despite ensuring there's no excess glue on the lid and it's firmly sealed, the solvent seems to evaporate over time. This means the glue gets thicker and thicker till eventually I have about a quarter of tin of very thick and unusable goo. This is the second time it's happened.



Is this just a defect with this container or am I missing something and not sealing it correctly?


Sounds like you're missing more solvent. Maybe someone knows what solvent it uses.

One way to reduce solvent evaporation due to a poorly-fitting lid (although it looks tightly closed) is to store the tin upside down. If there is a slight leak, the glue leaks and self-seals as the tiny amount of solvent evaporates at the leak site. The only downside is that it might be a bit difficult to get the lid off next time you want to use it!

What is the solvent? Acetone maybe? That stuff seems to get away from any container, and I often wondered how on a new tin they made it stay fresh. Brian

Your container is probably too big for this, but what I do for less than adequate containers, is put them inside a preserve jar. The kind with the metal ring, the metal top, and the sealing gasket (of sorts). I keep the touchup paint for the car, in such a bottle, as you can smell solvent around that one, so I didn't even need for it to dry out, I just put it in the bottle right away.

If it's from the punk glue-sniffing era, then probably toluene, newer formulation xlyene?

I think it's mainly heptane and isomers and solvent-naptha according to a Google search. A suggestion was some unleaded petrol works well to thin the thickened stuff out.

I'll try some petrol and see how that goes. Not sure which is now cheaper, a litre of unleaded or a tin of genuine Evo-Stik remover!

The tins must be designed to leak as it says you should store it in a well ventilated place.

I looked this up and there are a few articles that list some of the solvents used depending on application. That was assuming that Evo-Stik was a neoprene rubber.

And gives the proportions. Of course there could be more effective solvents but not included from being toxic.

Given neoprene is said to be tolerant of petroleum products I might be looking at "ethyl acetate" as being the 'most' active ingredient and watered down by the other ingredients.

One good source of solvent of the naptha grade is lighter fuel - you can still buy it

cellulose thinners is another.
