Which means you *have* to have a gmail account on your phone. And from there Android does it's damned best to make you use it.

For myself I have set an unconditional forwarding on my gmail account to my grown-up one, just to catch anything significant. Which is generally a lot of s**te from any service you have "signed in with Google" for.

Somewhere there is a google account that has my (unused, but monitored) hotmail account as it's secondary email. I occasionally get a security checkup reminder about it. However I've long lost the password and it refuses to allow me to reset it without it. I can't even get to the lost password screen.

At that point it kicks me out because I'm using a disposable email address to test it out. But if you're using a real one not on their blacklist you can create an account. You might also need to tell them a phone number as well, it depends how suspicious Google is feeling.

(You can get around the phone number check by saying you want a new account when setting up an old Android phone, although I'm not sure if it'll let you go non-gmail there. They may ask for a phone number later though)

How does snipped-for-privacy@mailinator.com come to be on any blacklist? Has it been misused in the past?

That option wasn't available when I was forced to create my account.

Of course now, the problem is all my data is associated with the @gmail account, and I am not inclined to risk moving it and add to the existing risk that Google could blow it away anytime anyway.

Mailinator is a purveyor of disposable email addresses - you can make up any prefix and receive emails to it on their website with no login (messages are deleted after a few hours). Because this enables all kinds of dodgy behaviour it's common for that domain to be blocked for signups on various websites.

(it is possible to point any domain at Mailinator and it works the same way, which is a way around mailinator.com being blacklisted. But smarter signups block any domain that point to the Mailinator IP addresses. It's a cat and mouse game. Other throwaway email providers exist...)

It's been available for 10 years at least. Although I couldn't guarantee that it's offered on all platforms - if you sign up on Android or Chromebook or something maybe it isn't an option.

Google Takeout lets you download all your info, and maybe you could upload it to a new account?

Many people conflate a gmail account with a good one - they don't have to be the same thing. You can for example create a google account attached to any email, not just gmail.

(if you do create a gmail account, then you automatically get a google account to go with it).

or just make sure you install Win 11 Pro. Then at the prompt for a MS account, select the "Sign in options" link, then "Domain join instead", it will then ask you to create a local account.

Click the link to create an account, answer the questions until you get to the "Choose your Gmail address" page, and click the "Use your existing email" link. You can then have a google account attached to any email including outlook.com or yahoo etc.

Only things like using the Mail object in Google Apps Script. However you can have gmail send from your own email address if you want (although you will likely have to setup appropriate SPF and DKIM records on your domain to get reliable delivery)

It helps to have a google account, but it does not need to be on a gmail address.

You could use mail forwarding on the intermediate domain rather than pointing the MX records at the mailinator servers.

My Huawei android phone has no Google services on it at all.

I've seen quite a few cheapskate outfits that bought their kit cheap and only had Home licences. Which know nothing about AD.

If you install Aurora Store you can access all the software in the Play Store without needing Google Services Framework (GSF). It'll tell you in the catalogue whether an app needs GSF or not. It gives the option of using one of their anonymous Google accounts for downloading so you don't need a Google account of your own.
