Although it isn't it does look like it.



This is a vehicle which is blown along by a following wind, until it is going as fast as the wind and then in fact it goes much faster than the wind that is blowing it.



Fascinating I thought. Not so much difficult to understand as difficult to believe. and not tricks or hidden magnets.

That's an easy thing, just a windmill powered car. This is not the same at all.

In that this one is a propeller, not a wind turbine, it goes in the other direction.

Going up wind is easy as you can extract energy easily. Going down wind faster than the wind and extracting energy is a con.

The treadmill models just extract the energy from the treadmill motors.

There is nothing difficult to understand.

Well if you understand it explain how it extracts energy by going faster than the wind it is extracting it from.

Not perpetual motion, but I remain convinced that a high efficiency turbine built aerodynamically into a car bonnet could, at certain speeds, provide enough power to run say the air con or radio with no noticeable effect on fuel consumption.

The whole thing is totally counter-intuitive so you can be forgiven for thinking it's a con, but it isn't. I am not a teacher or a physicist so i am not going to try to explain it in detail but let me say a couple of things:

this is not a windmill or a wind turbine powering the wheels. The wheels power a propellor which pushes the vehicle along. I don't know what you mean by a 'treadmill'.

It's been known for a long time that a landyacht/sandyacht can zig-zag downwind faster than the wind itself, eg it can catch and overtake a bit of litter blowing across the sand by 'reaching' at an angle where the apparent wind doesn't decrease as your speed across the ground increases.

The power to the aircon/radio is coming from the engine whether it's a belt drive direct from the engine, or a turbine bolted to to the bodywork being pushed by the air the car is driving past ...

Is this not just the same as what you get with gearing or whatever. It depends on the area of wind collection and whether the deflection due to the angle is chaotic or not. I remember somebody with a land yaught trying to explain tacking to me once. Brian

No con, just the inability to accept fact and jump to wrong conclusions.

Power collected at wheels is force x land velocity.

Assuming no losses, the propeller can supply motive power of force x (land velocity - wind velocity)

You should be able to see that there can be an excess of power developed by the wheels over the propeller to maintain speed.

Any excess can be used to accelerate the car still further until propeller and other efficiencies make up the difference.

The wind speed when travelling down wind at the wind speed is exactly zero so where are you getting the power?

Try to accept the power is coming from the wheels and going into the propeller and not the other way round

Try and accept that you don't understand physics. You can only extract the energy from the wind there is no other source in the system. Once you grasp that you will understand.

Sort of. The wheels do *turn* the thing that looks like a propeller, but t he key to understanding this machine is that it's *not* a propeller. It's a turbine which acts like a *sail*. It's just shaped like a propeller, whi ch confuses everybody who looks at it.

The machine moves forward because the wind is blowing on the turbine, direc tly pushing the vehicle downwind (just like a sail). The really clever bit is that the faster across the ground the vehicle travels, the faster the t urbine rotates (because it's connected to the wheels). To the wind, the su rfaces of the turbine still look like they're moving forward at a speed rel ative to the ground of *lower* than wind-speed.

Yes, you extract energy by blowing backwards against the wind that is blowing you forwards.

That's how you decelerate the wind to get energy out of it

NO, it isnt. But the turbine is being spun by the wheels, yes.

The backwards turbine acts as a super speed sail and blows the vehicle faster than the wind, and then the vehicle motion drives the turbine.

The energy comes from the wind, via the wheels, not from the wheels

Exactly. wind->wheels->turbine is the way it works

The key is being able to slow the wind down whilst travelling faster than it.

That needs a wheel turbine coupling and the turbine blowing backwards
