Smart meters from two suppliers

I'm wondering if anyone has both gas and electric smart meters, but from different energy suppliers (ie not dual fuel). If so, how does the gas meter talk to the outside world?

Isn't there a meter 'wireless operator' who handles all the comms, and the suppliers get it from there? Don't know how an installation with only a gas smart meterwould go on. Probably have to be read manually.

As I thought the gas meter communicates with the Electric meter:

"In your home as an energy customer, you will have a smart meter for electricity and a smart meter for gas (if you're dual fuel). Both meters communicate with a communications hub which is normally a part of the electricity meter however, it could be separate if your gas smart meter is installed first".

I guess it all depends on who owns what meter and the agreements between the companies. And the size of battery in the gas meter!

There is now

but it wasn't always the case.

I don't think it's possible. We refurbished our present house that we bought a couple of years ago. It had oil fired heating. I got gas installed. Our electricity supplier was OvO, they installed a smart meter, but they couldn't initiate the gas supply, only the 'big six' suppliers are able to that (I was told), so I went with SSE [1] and they said they couldn't fit a smart meter because my electric smart meter and account was with OvO.

I've since migrated the gas supply to OvO, but I can't be bothered to get converted to a smart meter. Primarily, because I don't think the comms will work. The straight line between the electric and gas meters is 12 metres worth of brick work (They are in/on the same wall but 12 metres apart)

The IHD unit can only just see the smart meter and that's just one layer of breeze, and five layers of plasterboard.

[1] Ironically this was still the case, even though OvO had bought SSE's retail energy business

"if", and I'm asking about when not.

Electric meter is being installed first.

Is there an official matrix somewhere?

That applies even in the case of dual-fuel.

That depends on how old they are. In modern designs its all done via the electricity meter via a radio link from the gas meter, after all, the data is tagged for the supplier you are using, its still the same data. Brian

No I have heard of units that just read gas, though this may well still be via a radio link powered by battery. Brian

Yes one of the bits in my Electric meter seems to be made by Toshiba, but the other is not. Brian

I'm asking on behalf of someone having installation done later this month.
