Are these any good?
I like the way wallpaper paste lets you slap a border on the wall, then slide it about to follow your straight line. I imagine the self adhesive type are a "once it touches, it stays" type of adhesive, capable of ripping large tracts of wallpaper with a single mistake.

No it's more like super post-it glue. You can peel off and reposition(*), it only sticks hard after a while or after been pressed on firmly. Why not visit a shed and get a few samples to play with?
(*) But try a few tests first!

I tried a few samples, and it peels off fine.
Does it dry out to become properly sticky, or is it permanently removable?

I think they "dry out" and become permanent. 10'+ ceiling in daughters bedroom so can't reach it to try...
