I wish a sofa would fall on him.

It would be Divan intervention.

"The victims were working for a UK-based property and construction firm which employs only Polish workers and had been warned three times about safety standards in recent years."

Poor buggers.

If that's true I hope the firms owners are gaoled.

That would settle it.

This is Usenet. Unwarranted assumptions and cack-handed opinions are the very lifeblood of this pursuit and you want to stifle that?

For that reason. However I would expect a Steinway concert grand to be delivered by a specialist piano mover rather than "white van man"(*). They'll have the right lifting, rolling and stair kit to shift it. Pianos are almost glued to the floor but get it balanced on a suitably strong two wheeled dolly underneath and they are a doddle to move about. You only need to lift one end a foot or so to get the dolly under.

(*) Can we still use that term or is it now politcally incorrect?

My sister and b-i-l bought a Victorian semi in Sutton c.1980, all new windows except one which was he original sash window. Vendor explained that the only way to get a double bed in was to remove sashes and take it in through opening as stairs too tight.

One argument for an IKEA assemble yourself bed I guess.

The ones they use in the Netherlands aren't usually on the back of a lorry, because that would block the typically narrow street for the duration.

By the time I noticed, they'd pretty much finished moving those items.

The involvment of beds in assembling human beings well predates Ikea!

Apparently there are clauses in the letting contract that forbid moving furniture through communal areas i'e through the ground floor front door and up the stairs. The problem in this case seems to be that a crane or lifting platform should have been used and was not. I should think that the person responsible is looking at a H&S prosecution at a minimum.

Prosecuted, anyway. For illegal employment practices, at the very least.

If you forbid moving furniture through communal areas you should also expressly forbid the use of railings for anything whatsoever, even leaning against. I'm sure they were a hazard that the managing agents saw fit to ignore. Easier to just give them another coat of paint and hope for the best

Knew a guy once who could pick up washing machines and carry them as if they well, didn't exist;!.

Once had a problem with the jack off the van gone missing, and yep!, he just picked it up whilst someone else changed the wheel.

With one hand .. the other was puffing a ciggy.!.

Makes my back feel sore just thinking of what he could do;!..

But a Piano !! thats summatt else!..
