Red and black cables

There's no going back about it, most domestic wire (fixed and plugin) is a mix of redblack and bluebrown.

Germany. Red was earth.

For addtions to existing circuitry that would make sense. At the moment I have red/black and brown/blue cables and a warning sign on the consumer unit. I cannot see how this contributes to safety.

And which countries have the traffic lights upside down? Not even the area of the Great Western Railway?

That and the fact that the Leavers had principles and intelligence, both of which are lacking in Remoaners!

The problem is compounded by the fact that women are less able to compare colours than men. Hence the need for automated colour setting on CRT production lines.

Which of course should never happen. It's one thing I am at odds with BS7671 over:

It is prohibited from using a single G/Y core (say in trunking full of singles) as a live conductor.

It is however permissible if the G/Y is part of a cable assembly and insulated (so flex, but not T+E where it is bare within the sheath).

Which is not unknown with bathroom fans with timer over-run, and some central heating applications.

Not if wired by the electrician that I fired when I found he'd used the Green/Yellow CPC as the switched live on my shower fan :( He was off the premises in minutes with a flea in his ear that is probably still ringing :)

So you say. I saw evidence of neither.

You would probably sack me then as I used the green yellow as switched live in the 6" of flex between my PIR and the junction box on the wall inside. It really needed some old three core and I could have used the green. ;-)

Nobody sells short lengths of flex that has different colours that I can find so its a case of make do with a few bits of red sleeving.

Yes, pretty standard in the electronics industry as well because of the need to be able to read resistor colour codes too.

I've often wondered why, for maximum colour differentiation, white for live, black for neutral and black/white stripe for earth wasn't chosen when the colours changed to brown, blue, and green/yellow. It's also a bit of a puzzle why light blue, rather than mid (or should that be mid/dark) blue wasn't selected at the time for better differentiation from brown.

If *you* don't understand how the 'new' colours relate to the 'old', leave electrics to a pro. Which is probably good advice anyway, given how long the new has been around.

Yes. The plumber using one real of flex for everything. Seen it often. To save a couple of pennies.

You can't have tried hard. Both my local plumber's merchant and electrical wholesaler sell various multi-core flexes by the metre. Or did last time I checked. Think I've seen it in some sheds too.

I do understand, actually (Brown = red, blue = black, green/yellow = green).

Anysay, if you are leaving the electrics to a 'pro' why would it matter if cable colours differed from flex colours.

I wonder if he was the same one that used the earth in some T&E as the switched live for an external light in my last house?
