is there a gadget that takes the dust out of the air in a room ? ...
Judging by the amount of dust I found when removing the cover of my set top box (which lives on a shelf below the TV) any electrical equipment with a fan or ventilation slots.

Dehumidifiers are also very effective.

You need electrostatic for attracting dust.
You can buy fans with HEPO filter I have one.
According to the ads, a Dyson fan does just that. Mate who has one informs me it also refrigerates the air in the room. He got a bit annoyed when I asked him how it was any better than any fan in that respect. As you would when you've paid a lot of money for a designer fan.
We have a had a Honeywell cylindrical device for some years now and use it now and again when we know well be kicking up some dust.

It has a very large filter in it, like it's come out of a lorry. ;-)
Fairly quiet on the lowest setting and fairly breezy on the highest.

Pretty effective, the electrostatic effect accumulated a layer of dust that was readily cleaned off the following morning by the "good lady".
For real grubby establishments I would recommend a valve model that used the heat generated to trap even more dust inside.
A set top box and modulator is needed if you want to leer at the "talent".
Times have changed though :-(

Many of the items here are not in stock, thanks to COVID.
The design of these, is "filter", rather than "electrostatic air precipitator".

This style works with central heating furnaces, and is bolted to the side, on the cold air return. This allows *all* of the house air, to be passed through the electrostatic section. Every bit of your house air is filtered. Whereas the portable units provide "bare coverage" for the room the unit sits in.

There's likely to still be some sort of cleaning procedure with those (if it isn't done by water plumbed to the unit). Some industrial precipitators, have a cleaning cycle where the collector is washed down every once in a while.

You can make your own. They are not complicated and I posted a DIY circuit earlier. As Bigclive pointed out, in the right circumstances, even a small domestic one can be effective.
In the past, I have been involved with large commercial versions, cleaning the air entering vast halls. Electrostatic Precipitator systems, installed in six foot square ducts, with intake air and recirculated air passed gently over the HV system.
