In the end what drives Darwin in technology is cost benefit in whatever resource is scarcest.

E,g as energy prices now comfortably exceed the *true* levelised cost of nuclear power, nuclear power is what we will ultimately get.

If AI exceeds in some way the cost of employing smart computer people, AI will fail.

If slower cheaper RAM results in less overall cost people will switch to that from super fast DDR5

And if the USA or the EU *mandates* otherwise, then Asia will win the economic war.

My only one is odd. Very odd

Have you read the story about the boss of Supermicro ?

He is a longterm mate of the boss of nVidia and had priority access to the fastest Nvid GPU's, but has been selling his servers with these GPU's into China in defiance of the USA ban on exporting certain chips to the Chinese. Using hairdryers to remove product labels and putting them onto empty boxes to fool compliance checkers seems to be par for the course.

Supermicro's share price has tanked as a result. Could be (one of) the straws that broke the AI camels back ?.

Lots of suggestions that the AI companies 'reserved' almost the entire global output of DDR4 LPDDR chips for their own (possible) purchase which has driven up prices.

Unlike 1999, the people throwing lots of money at AI also have a massive amount of cash coming from their existing businesses to fund it.

Yes and no. The Pi 5 isn't good VFM because there are cheaper and better SBCs available. But the low-end Pi 0 and Pi Nano are decent pocket-money devices that give enough bang per buck.
