Very interesting indeed. Fortunately I have enough RAM in my 'puters, diesel in my car and oil in my heater tank for several more weeks...

Hmm, I hope the daft increases in memory (incl HDD) prices is about to be reversed (just like house and car prices in the US after the 2022 hike)

There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact. Mark Twain

According to one commentator on BBC’s PM programme this evening, several more weeks is when the shortages and the price rises really kick in…

Things like even-numbered cars allowed on the road on one day, odd numbered cars the next day, 50mph overall speed limit…

Fluctuations in the undesirable range are just fluctuations. They do not predict some total-reversal.

Only the bursting of the AI bubble can do that. The business failure of several of the AI players and so on.

In a gold rush, one reason for buying mules and shovels, is so the next guy cannot buy mules and shovels and get the gold before you. This is why you build 10GW datacenters. It's not because you needed 10GW of processing power, it's because you want to hog all the gas turbines and transformers for your own self.

There is already a technology that can reduce the size of everything, and that has had no impact at all. They will pile up innovation after innovation, and just keep doing it the stupid way (while looking over their shoulder at how close the other hounds are getting to their heels).

You have probably already read articles, where the writer will question "what if your current rack is old hat, you must buy another newer one, and a newer one after that". How many trillions can you pour into a bonfire, with nothing to show as a profit for the shareholders ? Buying a new rack, helps the shareholders not at all. But when playing poker with your competitors, it's all part of that game.

I bet somewhere, there is a site with piles of tulip bulbs on it, once quite valuable, now, just dust. Pretty ones. Ones that had purple and yellow and pink flowers. The era even invented its own Wiki article.

At some point, the AI companies will burn through all their cash. What then.

The supply chain from the Gulf is broken pretty much right at the start, so there are still some supertankers on the high seas, and refineries yet to process the crude, and tankers to drive it to filling stations (some of whose tanks are only temporarily empty because of media-inspired panic buying).

If the Straights are opened up tomorrow, it'll be eight weeks before that oil gets to your local Tesco supermarket.

That'd be a bummer, all my three cars are odd-numbered. Time for a quick even-numbered personal plate, perhaps.

Even on motorway standard roads around here, it's difficult to do over

50 anyway. HGV elephant races and so on.
