"We’ve recently reviewed your Direct Debit to make sure it covers your energy use and any account balance. As a result, we're increasing your energy payments from £146.80 to £174.61. This change will take effect on or around 23 August 2026"

Thank you Milibrain.

Personally I think Trumps war of choice against Iran is more culpable.

Can't be. Right now hardly any gas is in play. It's all wind and solar

It can be. The current spot price is quite high. Nearly as much as January, whereas, for 2025, July was much lower than January. So I would assume gas is driving it higher. I would assume it will go much higher this winter due to lack of Qatar LNG.

Obviously Milibrand is responsible, amongst others, for our reliance on renewables and also gas. However, I think the major long term thing driving up gas prices is our sanctions on Russia.

It is like the politicians conspire to come up with ways of driving the price up. i.e. they aren't willing to accept the constraints imposed by their chosen strategy.

But the Green lobby keep telling us how much of UK electricity is from renewables so even if gas prices have risen it should have been offset many times over by the almost free wind and solar.

Why would gas dtive it higher?

Of course, and they make trillions in gas futures. Like Tony Blair did with houses buying them up before relaxed mortgage rates drove the prices through the roof. Total cunts, all of them

The fact is that renewable energy is subject to a massive contract for difference, The more renewable energy the more we pay.

Plus all the battery costs etc

Canada is all right really, though not for the whole weekend. "Saki"

It might be this second, but gas still plays a significant part most of the time.

Sigh. You wont ever face facts will you Rob? A believer till the last

Energy pricing is still tied to gas - even if little is being used.

Actually I'm a bit confused, AIUI you use oil for heating and cooking. How do you spend £174.61 on electricity? I spend something like £50 quid. There is a lot to be said for a using Pis as computers and a new TV and Freezer.

Gas is still a significant proportion of electrical generation, 27% over the last year. Gas prices have increased 60%. We need to buy gas for winter.

So yes you can say some of the rise may be due to renewables, but the real crippling recent bump is from rises in gas prices.

Putin wants to sell us cheap gas. I wish we bought it. He might be a bad chap, but so are Trump, MbS, etc. We should have spread the risk.

I believe Trump associates are doing that. I'm not sure where Blair's money came from, but he certainly got a lot from somewhere.

So it's a political decision to keep prices high? I wonder why?

Surely not. So much wind and so much solar and so much bullshit from the green lobby and you would believe that no gas is being used at all.

I believe its historic. In order to get investment into renewables the contracts specify this pricing model.

Well there is a lot of 24x7 stuff - refrigerators and the s*it stirring tank. Plus a fair amount of computer kit

That's a euphemistic way of putting it. Let's try 'people bribed governments to pay them to install technology they knew wouldn't work and sell it to the sheeple as 'eco friendly''...

Right now its very very low. 6.7% of all generation .

Instead we are importing throwaway priced solar from Le Continent

But that's still about 25 units a day - over 3 times the UK household average.

I'd be looking at cutting consumption . . .

Cheers, Rob Sheffield, UK

It's more than what I pay including hot water, heating, cooking and running a server 24/7... (no gas or oil here)

Theo

House is 5 times uk average size.

TBH I cant be arsed.

I pay more in council tax and oil

I don't pay gas,

My point wasn't about absolute cost, it was about the massive jump when I haven't changed consumption at all.

EDFs also bangs up the price in summer to pay for the winter, but I don't really use any more leccy in winter at all.
