Renewable energy is so fucking cheap....

I decided not to live in a rabbit hutch many years ago

There is nothing a fleet of dispatchable nuclear power plants cannot do that cannot be done worse and more expensively and with higher carbon emissions and more adverse environmental impact by adding intermittent renewable energy.

But the rabbit hutch size mostly influences what you pay for heating. Unless you have aircon, I can't see how the size of your house makes a difference to your electricity bill.

Perhaps a large house with such a large electricity bill would be a good location for some solar panels and a battery? ;-)

When every room takes 8 bulbs to light...

Don't be silly. I am a true socialist

"An intellectual is a person knowledgeable in one field who speaks out only in others...” Tom Wolfe

Yebbut an LED bulb takes roughly 2-4W, so that's 18-36W per room. Still not much.

Unless you believe no-one can better Mr Edison's finest incandescent lamps, and are using 50W GU10s everywhere?

True - a capitalist would be interested in the financial return.

Theo

Still have a lot of those yes.

Cant be arsed to replace them till they blow

I have found that most people that call themselves socialists are selfish money grabbers

And spend their time virtue signalling

New Socialism consists essentially in being seen to have your heart in the right place whilst your head is in the clouds and your hand is in someone else's pocket.

Is it called Château Navet? ;-)

For heating a 5 bedroom house, cooking, lighting and doing 14,000 miles in my EV last year (charged at home), I paid under £1 a day (thanks to solar panels, EV tariff and home battery).

Obviously I’m doing something wrong.

Tim

Please don't feed the trolls

yes. You and your renewable subsidies are why my bills are what they are.

Fascist cunt

Future generations will wonder in bemused amazement that the early twenty-first century’s developed world went into hysterical panic over a globally average temperature increase of a few tenths of a degree, and, on the basis of gross exaggerations of highly uncertain computer projections combined into implausible chains of inference, proceeded to contemplate a rollback of the industrial age. Richard Lindzen

No. As has been explained, your bills are so high because you use so much energy.

IME* it'd be trivial to better than half your electricity consumption. Unless you have outgoings that you're not sharing - heated pool for example.

Renewable subsidies are mainly (80%+) for offshore wind - not domestic solar. That's a separate discussion.

  • of staying in a huge house with a lot of 'ambient' devices for a week.
Cheers, Rob Sheffield, UK

You simply know nothing about my situation at all

Last month I used 458 units of electricity. More than usual because the Aga is off for the summer

Most people use 200+ units a day .

People with solar panels are paid 12p a unit for export. For electricity that is not worth 4p

And which costs about 19p a unit to balance with gas.

And EDF charge me

Day rate: 31.98p per kWh

Night rate: 14.62p per kWh

Standing charge :54.15p per day

And claim that is the cheapest tariff

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is. -- Yogi Berra

Of course.

Not too bad - similar to someone I know who leaves halogen lights on 24/7. And I'd guess if you're doining a fair bit of daily roasting/baking it could easily add up to 15/day.

Month - yes.

Not sure of your point but that's nothing like what I get.

Yes, so you keep saying - without figures or a source. I can't just take your word on views and data that appears to be at least a decade out of date. This is what AI has to say:

For 2024/25, NESO's (National Energy System Operator, the old National Grid ESO) total balancing costs were about £2.7 billion, of which £1.7-1.9 billion was constraint payments — over 70% of the total. Roughly £350-380 million of that was paid to wind farms to curtail output, while replacing that lost wind with gas-fired generation cost over £1 billion (up from £835 million the prior year). On household bills, balancing costs currently average about £3/month (4.3% of a typical bill). NESO projects this could rise to £4-8 billion a year by 2030 as offshore wind capacity keeps outpacing the transmission grid's ability to move that power from Scotland to demand in the south — the bottleneck won't be resolved until new subsea cables and pylon lines complete later in the decade.

The reason is because some idiots wants us to burn expensive fossil fuels rather than use renewable resources. Put Trump in the equation to further increase your bill.

I thought were a Trump supporter? And his policies, "drill baby drill"?

Unfortunately we don't have enough renewable energy such that gas prices still dictate the cost of generation.

The irony is that if gas generators were turned off due to renewable overcapacity then we might see competition amongst renewable resources and a substantial drop in your bill.

However polices, that you support, advocate the total dependency on gas.

Do be careful for what you wish for!

I'll think of you and thank you everytime I pay my electricity bill then

Yes, you antisocial wanker

A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.

I got something similar from the water company today. They're increasing my DD from £64.40 to £85+.

But an antisocial wanker who pays under market value for electricty.

Lucky you! My water DD went up in April from £87 to £117.

I loathe the Water Company’s pleas to ’save every drop’. It isn’t up to me to make up the shortfall in water supplies caused by the lack of investment in the decades since privatisation, especially now I’m being hit in the wallet to pay for the investors’ gravy train.

Spike

For years, I stuck with the rateable value billing, in order to avoid worrying about my volume of usage, but their upcoming increases finally got to me, so I switched to a water meter ... my DD dropped from £87.91 to £26.57

Because the rest of us pay over

You are just another wannabe greedy capitalist with their boots on the neck of the WurkingClars

If you think it would be any better if nationalised I have a bridge to sell you

GPO, BR, disasters when nationalised.
