Booting to Ventoy

I am getting to know (playing with) my HP Proliant Microserver Gen8 which involves installing different OS and seeing how they work.



I reset the BIOS to defaults then changed the drive controller to SATA mode then had to change the boot order (it doesn't seem to move on the the next device if it can't find a prior device which seems odd).



Anyway no probs, have installed Linux Mint and Win 10 as part of the exercise.



However, it will not boot from my Ventoy drive. The drive is in a USB3 caddy (new one) with a USB3 cable but plugged into a USB2 port because USB3 on the HP depends on the OS. Ventoy is installed to a MBR partition which means it should boot in legacy or UEFI mode.



The HP does boot with no problem from a USB Thumbdrive created with Rufus

Correction, I changed the SATA mode to AHCI.

Can the BIOS see the Ventoy drive as a boot drive? Some BIOSes just don't like drives in adapters (either SATA to USB or SD card to USB). Using a thumbdrive is best.

That is a good point. Aeons ago in the mists of time some BIOSES could bot handle large disks at all. Only the US, once booted, could. And you needed limited size partitions at the very start of the disk to boot from. But I haven't seen that in years. OTOH I only am booting Raspberry Pis using a USB to SATA drive cable...

Mileage will definitely vary

It does seem to be very sensitive little soul. I will do another test later, it seems if the main boot drive is blank it will boot from a sausage roll but otherwise it doesn't want to know.

Final step - when making the Ventoy drive turn off "Support for Secure Boot", now works perfectly.

Oh god BTDTGTTS!

secure boot. Legacy boot UEFI boot.

One laptop I juts kept trying stuff till it worked!
