IIUC, that only applies to old (2013) versions of Outlook:

That - "basic authentication" - is the "this way" that no longer works.
You can still use POP3 for outlook.com addresses in Outlook 2019 with an app password. Happens daily on machines I try to look after.
Which doesn't say POP or IMAP is going way, just that you need to use a newer authentication method (OAuth2) this already happened over a year ago for MS365 business accounts, gmail accounts and other email providers.

WHAT???. Are you saying Thunderbird will not be able to connect to my @btinternet.com email by IMAP some time in the future? I see that Thunderbird has 'Normal password' for its btinternet authentication method, but gmail and Yahoo are on 'OAuth2'.
That's what my friend has been told by BT, having received BT emails warning about it some time ago. If you haven't been warned, maybe it's not a problem for you.
