Item 1. DPD. Receive e-mail message in morning that package due between

11:55 and 12:55 today. At about 13:10, I am on the sofa within sight-line of the front door, and I hear several very faint electronic beeps, with no idea where they come from, it sounds a bit like my UPS alarming. My instruction for DPD, if I am not at home, is to leave packages in gas bottle lean-to behind the house. Steve the postie does it with no trouble. A few minutes after the strange beeps, I hear the clear tones of the doorbell at the rear door. It is DPD. To get there, he had to walk past the lean-to. But why did he not knock on the front door? I was about 3 yards from it when he should have been there. But at least I got my package.*

Item 2. Amazon. No e-mail or any other alerts of anything happening today. While I am sitting at the PC, the 'phone rings, it's that weird spoken text message thing, telling me that the Amazon driver is near to my home, and will be with me soon. Shortly after, and I mean about a minute, another message comes through that the delivery has been made. Huh? Certainly, nobody knocked on the door, this time I was maybe 3 1/2 yards from it. The doorknocker will wake the dead if used. I go on to my Amazon account page, and there is a photo of a package dropped behind the gate to my driveway. And yes, it is there. Luckily, considering the weather, it is in a plastic bag.

  • Maybe he had a StarTrek Communicator, which beeps while it's thinking.

Some time back I was expecting an NVidia TV Show from Amazon, about £200 if I remember. Like you I can see the van pulling up so when I saw it I went to the front door to see the courier walking away empty handed. I called out so he went to the van got out my parcel and handed it to me, no explanation.

I was a bit confused about what might have happened if I hadn't seen him so I logged on the their chat service and spent an hour speaking to 7 (from memory) people none of whom had any idea what my concern was, in the end I ended up with a senior person who apologised and refunded the £200.

I just could not get through to them what the issue was and their only options seem to be a return and/or refund. No matter, nice bit of kit for nothing!

Persistence pays off, if you have the time.

I have a bank account in the US, and recently the bank was merged/taken over/swallowed by a different bank. Total chaos as far as anybody accessing their accounts is concerned. I have spent hours, quite literally, on the 'phone, at international call rates, trying to get my access to work. The bank wants to send an SMS with a code, I receive such texts from other US bodies, but this new bank cannot programme a non-US 'phone number into the SMS system. Every time it seems to be fixed, then the next time, it doesn't work. It still doesn't.

Well that sorta happened to me. Dumped the package outside my house in the road, took as photo, didn't inform me, and I surmise, took it.

I got my money back eventually. through a debit card reversal claimed against the original vendor. no one wanted to accept responsibility.

Courier company agreed it had been left 'in an unsuitable place', took no responsibility but claimed it was a 'local issue, that had been resolved'

I assume they fired the driver for theft.

You just interrupted the scam halfway through

You would have lost the package

All they really can do

Indeed,. You got your stuff,. why are you bothering them?

Yes.

"Toujours Bolleaux", as the French say.

2026, Davey snipped-for-privacy@example.invalid remarked:

My courier story from yesterday: Vendor emails me to say Evri has an item "Out for delivery" and I can look at the detailed tracking if I want.

Which said they would deliver at 10:15am, but by the time I'd read the email it was lunchtime. There's also a small "Or next business day", however I wasn't expecting it until Monday, no harm done.

It arrived at 4:15pm, no knock, no doorbell, just a rather soggy cardboard box propped up at the front of the house. (It must have been soggy in the van, because it was a very short walk from van to house, and I retrieved the item with a few seconds.)

I'd seen the van [and driver] come and go, curiously not plain white, or a private car, but gaudily signwritten with the details of a local mom-and-pop food delivery service.

Guessing that the original van broke down, and the driver borrowed a substitute from a friend. Or maybe he works two jobs?

Ob-DIY: It was an item of flat-pack, self-assembly furniture. Which only took a few minutes. Which I did immediately, in order to separate the soggy box from its contents.

'My' Evri driver does Yodel deliveries when she's finished her Evri round.
