He has just finished his second year - I have not worked with him for months (maybe 10 months) but I worked with him today.

He far outclassed the apprentice that I have been working with for the last five weeks that has just finished his third year.

Better and faster work - cleaner and tidier.

So I phoned his Dad to tell him how well he has doing and how well he has progressed since I last worked with him.

His Dad was delighted as that is the first feedback he has ever had.

That's good to hear.

I never doubted that you would praise apprentices who work hard and do good work but there have been times when it looked as if none of the good ones were being indentured by your firm.

Nick PS - do they still indenture apprentices these days?

Yes that is the problem with management today. When I worked, be very little encouragement was forthcoming from those who managed, or should I say pretended to manage people. Sadly when somebody made a mistake they came down on the person like a ton of bricks and it is little wonder that most of the good people left and went elsewhere. Brian

Though could be argued talking to Dad was a breach of confidence which might harm the apprentice. E.g. he might have been working on his Dad to lend him £25,000 to set up as a DJ "cos I'm really crap as a sparks" :)

I was a bit surprised that Adam had the dad's telephone number.

Home phone same as the Mum's!

I was surprised at Adam actually giving praise for anything... :-)

I worked at his house before his son was an apprentice for us.

That's what started the suggestion his son might become an electrician when he left school.

I rarely do it if the kid is not trying and prefers his smart phone than work.

That sums up about 90% of them.

I have praised others in the past.

Yes, I remember, over the years, seeing a number of posts praising some of your apprentices.

And I still stay in touch with some of them that now work elsewhere.

I guess he saw you at work and became all starry eyed...

Bill

Cough. Aren't ~50% of kids are now being brought up by single parents?

No, its not that high.

. And it is very far from clear that the kids of single parents are any worse as apprentices anyway.
