OT: Firefox and Opera

In message , Bill writes

I've allowed it to update and it does indeed go to 12.17 rather than V21, so that's good. I then filled in their survey about whether "Opera" is good or not. The trouble is that it nowhere lets you say what version you are reviewing.

The last version that works in win2k is 12.12 and the last version 12 compatable with winXP is version 12.17. Needless to say, I'm using v12.12.

I've tried the later v20 something versions on Vista and win7 systems but found myself having to choose the v12.16 (v12.17 is a very recent update) since the version 20 somethings are, to say the least, somewhat broken. It's no wonder that Opera is starting to lose 'market share'.

I find that after using FF+NoScript for so long, any other browser just becomes annoying, even with AdBlock and Flashblock.

That said, I tend to use Safari on my MacBook, mainly because FF sucks battery life compared to Safari but also because of the gesture support and, well it just looks nicer :) The Windows version is old now though.

You're taking this to extremes, aren't you?

XP SP3 released April 2008, Ubuntu 10.10 released October 2010, Seamonkey

2.0.3 released Feb 2010.

And all upgrades absolutely zero cost...

Thanks for that - downloaded 12.16 and 12.17 just in case.

The best Firefox alternatives don't, unfortunately. Roboform doesn't work with Waterfox (64 bit) and Pale Moon - and according to Roboform, never will - otherwise I would already be using Waterfox. It doesn't work with Safari for Windows either.

I've never had more than two or three open at once, so it isn't a problem for me.

I hadn't noticed that (but then I don't currently use it much) - I'll have a look at that.

That's the thing, though. There _are_ "breakages". XP SP2 especially. You seem to be deliberately using old, outdated software in the hope that means "not broken". News for you. It doesn't.

Ubuntu 10.04 is, at least, an LTS - but it's now two LTS versions ago.

SeaMonkey, I have no idea about - but the fact that your version was current for only a month probably says something - as does that version family having another dozen "stability and security" releases in not much over a year.

I use FireFox (& Thunderbird for this group access) not had any problems with any version ... other than getting UK spelchecker plugin sorted ... but even that has been fine for more than a year. Maybe I am lucky and all functions I use are OK.

I'm on v 29.0.1
