OT Fibre connection

If you’re happy with the speed now, I can’t imagine that there’s any advantage to being an “early adopter”. I suspect that if/when BT want to ditch the copper there will be tariffs designed to tempt the old curmudgeons away from their wires. ;-)

I get 80/20 at full whack via FTTC. I'm not planning to increase that with FTTP. My only drive to move to FTTP is because 'it's there', and it (should be) far more reliable.

Also, in 5 years time there will be no one left at Oprenreach who'll have the foggiest idea how 'copper' works, so getting faults fixed will be a struggle.

The latency should be lower with FTTP than with VDSL (FTTC).

Yes, both our sons are on FTTP (Sky via Openreach)  latency is about 5 or 6 ms for both of them. My FTTC is 10-12 ish. Not that it makes any practical difference to anything they or I do   ?

depends on what you pay for. FTTC gave me 70/20 (or pretty close). I now get 300/50.

For me the decision was easy, sub 2mbps at best on copper or Fibre with as much or as little as I wanted - - so went for 40/10( I think it is, plenty for me and a shift up to a different world with no stalling or dropping in bad weather). I can now video call family which was an impossibility before.

They could always read Atkinson.

Latency is lower and speed higher.

How much you benefit will partly depend on what kind of things you do online and on your ISP.

You might get a big improvement if you need to do large uploads, or any other application where you connect to, and send data to a remote system. You might get better response times for online gaming.

Much depends on which package you go for. The usual entry level FTTP from openreach is 220/30. (they may introduce slower packages for people who just order a "phone" line)

I get 150/30 for a fibre installed a few months ago.

A neighbour commented about satisfying the needs of 3 teenage children in addition to his work.

I upgraded from ADSL and the two things that are really noticeable are upload speed and total absence of support issues. It Just Works

I have EE fibre to copper and depending on the server at the other end, I can download at ~9MB/s.

They've already said they will be replacing copper with fibre in the near future.

I can see that - if lots using it at the same time. But adverts suggest everyone needs the highest speeds.

For you, the highest speeds don't seem worth it EXCEPT you mentioned a large download and this would definitely have been quicker with a fast speed. How many of those do you do a month/year? If not many then its back to my first line above.
