OT Damned Traffic lights

No, it's *UK* stupidity. No other EU country has ever had the problems the UK has introducing EU initiatives. Metrication ? As pointed out by the Commission, the UK went faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar beyond what was needed.

Smoking ban ? Ditto.

Which is the funniest thing about the effort being wasted on Brexit. Even if we do get free of the EU, we're still stuck with the same cretins in charge as before.

I don't see a problem with that if they get off their bikes

but unfortunately the HC treats them the same

Is the cycle path between Cambridge and Bottisham still completely not used?

That was why I stopped shopping in Cambridge. Yes, there's quite good Park+Ride. But it could be that I'm in town to buy quite a bit of stuff, and I've had problems finding that on the Internet because some stuff is inadequately described, or is not available, so you need to ask a shop assistant why not, or you need to fondle it to be sure that it *is* what you want, or you have some technical or other questions of someone who may actually know the answer.

I'm not going to P+R into town, by some stuff, P+R back to the car, put it in the car, P+R back into town, rinse and repeat.

No, it's the different legal systems. This has been explained before.

So how do these different legal systems explain the fact that Spain managed to introduce a smoking ban which mysteriously allowed cafes and bars to retain a smoking section ? When the UK was told it was "impossible" ?

Or, is differing legal systems an excuse for "gold plating" EU regulations. With reference to the metrication implementation previously referenced ?

You bought Europe into this for *no* reason other than your paranoia!

A lot of the rules do apply to the pavement as you will find out if you park on there next to double lines.

There are also addition rules too.

Why "rinse and repeat"? there's only one journey required.

Was it? Which bit of the UK was told this and by whom?

This is the bit that has been explained before.

That is certainly my experience of cyclists, and what ever happened to bike bells? The problem for us pedestrians though is that say on my own road, I take a little longer to get into a car which may be blocking the road for maybe 30 seconds, due to cars parked both sides while this is going on the taxi driver is being honked at as if he is in the wrong. I'm sorry but if 30 seconds makes a difference to a drivers life, then they should allow more time. People matter and I matter as much as the motorist. This is why shared surfaces do not work in the UK. Nobody is courteous, its all I have a big bit of metal so piss off pedestrian. Brian

I realise it is just my area so cannot be applied to everywhere. But in Edinburgh public transport is considered very highly.

From here, Balerno, into Edinburgh there is a bus (No 44) every ten to thirty minutes from about 5 in the morning to midnight even during this time there are night buses every hour .

Ok not everywhere has such good public transport and it is not a case of banning private cars but leaving all the other infrastructure as is . But certainly there is a case for slowly changing everything so private car travel is unnecessary .

depends on how big te items are. Back in the day I'd park all over cambridge and pick up even quite bulky items.

Then they made that impossible, and all the decent shops closed or moved out of town.

Only shops left there of any interest are bookshops and cafes.

Now that I have retired, when I travel to a city I usually work it that I do every thing on that day which means many stops all over the place including different suburbs on the way, carrying heaven knows what from each place, how you do that on public transport I do not know,it is a different matter commuting to the same place each day. I have never had that sort of job, I have mostly had a company vehicle darting from place to place, there are many others in the same circumstance for which public transport is useless and vehicle travel is a necessity .

Taxi drivers do seem to believe that the highway code doesn't apply to them and believe they have the right to completely block roads even if the people that booked them aren't ready and have asked the taxi to wait for ten minutes.

As for pedestrians, you have obviously never been past school at throwing out time. The younger generation of pedestrians seriously do think they own the roads and believe that all traffic should stop for them irrespective if it sensible or safe to cross at the time. The kids learn this behaviour from the drunken[*1] school run parents at an early age.

[*1] The only explanation I can think of for parking on pavements, on zig-zag lines and actually across crossings outside of schools. In addition just let the kids out of the cars by letting them open car doors into oncoming traffic.

I can remember around 15 years ago a new scheme was proposed for a local problem junction. Fortunately they tried out some of the proposed changes by putting up temporary signs and using cones to direct traffic. The scheme made the problem 10 times worse and the changes were abandoned after a week. I'll bet these days the councils would spend millions and disrupt the traffic for 6 months while actually fully implementing the proposed changes before finding out that they didn't work.

My observation on the traffic surveys (manned surveys or car counting boxes) that are used to justify the many changes is that the surveys take place at the wrong time - often during school holidays when commuter traffic tends to be lighter or during good weather when traffic tends to flow quicker. I even seen the men with clipboards do a six hour shift only between the off peak commuting hours when there are no problems.

I did make a big deal initially of 'not many' versus 'none'. I am not so naive that I think every journey should be PT but many could be.
