I think this would be the role of portable IR heaters on you near where you were working, or setup a marquee type thing if you needed to warm what you were working on as well.

As mentioned, I'd have maybe a couple of old stripped out mobile homes / static caravans inside the 'warehouse' for my lathe and or smaller woodworking / electronic jobs / man cave.

That sounds like quite a layout!

BIL recently moved to Norfolk and has nearly finished setting up the back half of his double garage for his model railway layout. Apparently it's going to be over two levels with a 'lift up hatch' across the doorway.

I believe he's going to lay the track as I suggested with an (electrically) isolated section that we hope to automate with an Arduino and some other stuff that he can run manually.

I wonder how many people actually still use their garages for cars? I think a few (that have them) use them for motorbikes but as cars got wider and more corrosion resistant ... and people got lazy it seems they prefer to keep them on the road / drive now days?

The last one sounds like a good plan, depending on how 'remote' you are etc.

My 'workshop' isn't that well insulated as 1) it would take up too much space, 2) I don't tend to use it in the very cold weather and 3) have some portable IR heaters down there that seem to work pretty well for providing general heat on me without trying to heat 120 x 10 x 8+' of 'space'.

I don't even have any insulation in the (gable) roof because most of it is full of things. ;-)

I can download everything for a stupid number of years on news.astraweb.com what is the retention on your server so you know if its just a case of resetting the news group and re-downloading it?

The last time I reset it it took ~20 minutes just to get the headers for D-I-Y at >30 Mb/s download. Thunderbird defaults to only doing 500 headers not the hundreds of thousands for all of them.

The workshop seems to have created quite a few replies! We are told it was a cold store so is pretty well insulated apart from the roof where apparently the insulated ceiling was collapsing so was taken down. It is constructed with concrete block walls, concrete floor, corrugated asbestos roof with some clear sheets the current owner added all on steel trusses.

It already has an inner workshop which the previous owner used as a wood working area. I'll need to open up the door to the main building though as it not wide enough for a vehicle to enter but looking at the walls its obvious the opening was originally wide enough.

The house dates back to 1789 when it is recorded as being a pub.

The current owners tell us they have had a lot of work done in the 40 years they have lived there including a lot of re-wiring. STWNFI loves it as it has a massive kitchen and a studio plus gallery attached to the double garage the current owner uses to paint and display her art. Woman cave???

Any thoughts, experience on modern facia material would be appreciated.

The reason being most garages - unless purpose built to your specification

- are simply too inconvenient to use. Basically, too small.

Indeed so. The only one I have had that was wide enough was a double in a 30s property, but it wasn't deep enough. :-(

There are quite a few in there, the last time I was there the biggest was about 50ft by 20ft in HO.

It the same group that take over some of halls at the NEC for the warley model rail show.

The club I go to only has a 22ft layout as its the biggest that will fit in the room. Its N scale though so its the equivalent of the 50ft one warley have.

I'm using an arduino for my DCC controller. I will probably use JMRI too.

I need DCC to run my N scale Pendolino model. But I am using the I/O pins to control the points and stuff, not DCC. I have had to use some nanos to generate pulses as I am using kato points and they burnout if you leave them powered. I could use more pins on the Arduino mega but there are only about 40 useable ones.

You can use H bridge motor controllers on DC models quite well. They let you control the speed and the direction without resorting to cr@ppy relays.

Perhaps I should buy this and slide it into the workshop:-)

Had a pal who bought a pre-WW2 house with a built in garage. In the 60s. Not big enough to take an Austin 1100 - so did wonder what car of the day would fit?

Me. Mt car's nearly 20 years old, the roof leaks... and the garage is 3m wide. It ought to hold a Transit without too much trouble.

Timber framed on a solid base. The insulation is between the timbers. The outer skin is ply; the weatherboard hasn't been fitted yet. Inner skin is ply in the workshop, and plasterboard in the study.

Roof is too flat a pitch to put much up there, so I'm not bothering. It's mostly full of rockwool.

Ah, ply lined pre-cast concrete panels here. I Gripfilled 6" lengths of 6x2" to the inside of the panels at 2' vertical centres and then hung the ply from there (with a bit of bubble-pack sheet in between).

I've got a bit of room from the ridge to the max for permitted development and I was considering making some new steel trusses and re-roofing it. Then I could insulate it and make more storage space at the same time.

Mines full of steel stock, plastic trunking / stock, folding boats, cycle wheels / trailers ... ;-)

We could have gone higher. But. We can sit in bed in the morning and look out across the valley to the next ridge, about 3 miles. There's only one building in sight in the valley, and that's the new mancave. We do _not_ want it blocking the view :)
